COUNTY COUNCILS.
WAIREWA. At a meeting ol the Wairewa County Council, on Monday, the chairman, Cr J. O. Coop, reported that a conference of the local bodies of No. Li Highways District was held to consider the advisability of compiling joint by-laws with, uniform license fees to regulate heavy motor traffic. A report of the conference had appeared in the Press. HaJowell, Heathoato, Paparun and Waimairi Counties had already joined with the city in adopting by-laws and the conference passed a resolution forming the remaining counties into two groups, the cne north and the other south, ol the Waimakariri River. At the meeting of the Highways Council, the Dyer's Pass road was cut out of the list oi main highways, and the road through Teddington to Sumner substituted.
The finance report showed a debit balance o£ £1968.
The road report stated a number of culvert pipes and 100 yards of metal r.io required for the Gebbie's Pass and lack roads. A substantial wail_ of stone and netting was built in the Kaituna stream to protect the road. The main road in the Kaituna Riding is being graded and an attempt will be made to scarify the corrugations .with the grader, using a special blade. Went's lorry broke through the Coach road over a 12in pipe culvert. The divert has been rebuilt, eleven new pipes Being used. Blanche has taken charge of the Puaha and Coach roads with H K-'t of work ahead of him. He will have the use of plough, grader and another man to help him. Part of Te Oka rond has been metalled and a. stone wall is being built. The Ram's Horn road is being put in order and a bridge on Peraki road will be repaired. A bridge on Puaha road is being repaired and the bridge near Stuart,'b on the Western Valley road requires planking. Cr. White asked if Church Bridge would be constructed. The Council had put in a log at the ford and raised the bed of the stream and if i flood occurred he considered the Council would be responsible. It was depided to advertise that gorge, wi'.low3 and other obstructions must be removed from the bed of all atreamo before March 31st. Cr. Chapman said tlio Collie Do£ Club had asked that the fence agreed uipon should be erected at the Council's paddock. It was resolved that the engineer interview the president of the club and get tho work done. . It \va3 left to Cre. Coop Mid Parkinson to arrange about repairs to a building on Mr Gray's leasehold. It wa; resolved that the purchase of a motor lorry he deferred in the meantime. It was decided that a detailed account be rendered to the Power B'wrd with a. request for immediate payment. ]t was agreed to supir-ort the Bruce County Council's resolution risking for an amendment to Section 14, Cla'3fle B of tne Main Highways Act, providing for the distribution of tyre tax revenue among local bodies yearly preferably in the form of . increased subsidy. A letter was read from the Hospital Board, and it was decided thai Mr G. Armstrong be invited to attend the next meeting of the Council to discusa the question of = hospital charges and houpital matter® general!y. It wna further resolved that the Regales of counties be aXh-d to discuss lioPoital matters at the next conference. Cr Chapman gave notice to move that
that part of hm motion providing for payment of 16s a day to councillor* for attending meetings be rescinded. The chairman wsui appointed delegate to the next conference of counties in Group Ko. 14. . .
