PERSONAL. Miss L. Loasicli, for the past three and a half years head of the dressmaking department of the Farmers' Co-op., has resigned for the purpose of making a tour of New Zealand, America, Canada, and other parts of the world. Prior to her leaving, the staff presented her with a travelling rug, and expressed best wishes for her future success. Miss E. Storrier, Ashburton Countv Hospital, is' spending a. few days in Timaru. Tinwald Cycling Club. The Tinwnld Cash Cycling Club held the fourth of its series of evening meetings over an eiglitccii-milo course on Wednesday evening. The start was scheduled for 6.30 p.m., but the limit men did not move off until nearly 7 o'clock, and the sky at that time was becoming overcast. Over the first lap the pace was fairly fast, and H. Cant, Arnst, and Biggart could be nfitieed riding strongly. Large black clouds banked up as the riders nenred the finish, but the rain held off until the race was over. Biggart was first over the line, followed by Broomfield, Brown, Cox, Shilling, and Jsckman. Cant made a great effort, unpaced, over the concluding stages and arrived seventh. It was reported at Wednesday's meeting of the Council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society that 1000 rounds of .303 rifle bullets anjl 300 rounds of Mauser had been procured and distributed. to- accredited persons for the culling of deer. The fishing competition held annually by the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society has had to be abandoned this season owing to the condition of the rivers. Lawn Tennis. The Ashburton Acclimatisation Society met on Wednesday. Present: Messrs G. 11. Ilefford (chairman), T. Wilson. I'. Cookson, 11. I'. Arnst, W. H. Robinson, and Arthur Gates. The chairman reported that 51 shag 3 had been destroyed in the two recent raids rnijde on the rookery at Maori Lake.

It was decided to thanlc those who had lent gear for the trip, and satisfaction was expressed at the result. It was resolved to apply for an open season from May Ist to July 31st for the shooting of grey duck, Paradise duck, and black swan. Conditions were laid down that the number of birds shot in one day must not exceed 25 grey duck and swan and six Paradise duck. It was decided that black teal be included in the. list of game for the season.

A sum of two guineas was awarded to Constable T. Excell for having secured a conviction against a person for shooting duck out of season._ Forty-two applications for deer licenses were received. It was decided to increase the number of licenses from 23 to 27, apportioned as follows: —Alford Forest 16, Rangitata 2, Rakaia 9. The ballot for blocks will be hel<l in the Society's olßco on Tuesday next. Askburton School. A special meeting of the Ashburton School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, Mr John Watson presiding. The letter received from the Education Board, which was discussed in these columns recently regarding the depth of water in the school baths was discussed. The Board further informed the committee that it could not authorise a certificates for subsidy purposes unless an undertaking was given that the water at the shallow cud be not more than 2ft Gin deep. Moreover, the bath had been built on the spot required for the new infant school, and the committee would be in an unfortunate position if the Board decided to build the infant school. It was decided to give the Board an understanding to accede to the request to reduce the depth of water in the baths to 2ft Gin at the shallow end. With regard to tho matter of site, the committee decided to reply regretting there was some misunderstanding. Members o£ the' Board had visited the site, and had seen the excavation in preparation for the building of the j baths, and no objection was mentioned. It was resolved to allow -the Swim- v ming Club to take up a collection on the occasion of its carnival on February 7 th. The Board advised of the appointment of Miss Ivy S. King, of Washdyke, to the position of assistant, as the Board had decided on the permanent substitution of an assistant in place of a pupil teacher. Miss Louie Gray, at present on the staff, has been promoted to the position of assistant vacated by Miss Swap. Miss L. Undrill and Mr W. Wilson, assistants,. were given temporary appointments, and Mr Ernest Mauger, of Timaru West School, was appointed assistant in place of Mr E. K. Dallev, who lias left for Lauriston, and appreciation of his services was recorded.. Swimming.

The AshTjurton East Swimming Club held an evening meeting at the Hanvpstead Memorial Baths yesterday. After a few days of hot weather rain fell, and the temperature was the lowest for some days. The racing was good throughout, and in all the events the competition was very keen. The first of a series of races for the Hunt Shield (boys) and the Hardie Shield (girls) created great interest. There are five tests in the series—speed, backstroke, breaststrolce, distance, and diving. "The following were the results: Iluftt Shield, 25yds (boys under 12) — J. Th6rnson 1, A. Husband 2.
