Miss M. E. Higgins is at present visiting Mrs Waterston (Union Bank, New Plymouth), and will probably bo absent for some weeks, staying at various places in the North Island. The engagement is announced of Mary, only daughter of Mr and Mrß E. J. Boss, of Garden road, Fendalton, to Laurie S., second son of Mrs A. M. Ayers, of Beecroft, Sydney.

Mrs T. J. Hunter and Master Max Hunter have returned to Ashburton after spending several weeks in Sumner.

Mr and Mrs W. J. Wilson and their two children have returned from a holiday spent on the West Coast. Mr and Mrs W. G. Hillier (Ashburton), who have been on a visit to the West Coast and the Hokitika Exhibition, returned to Christchnrch on Tuesday. Mrs L. D. Pickles and Mr G. D. S. Pickles (Bealey street) left last evening for Auckland. They will be away for about a month, returning via New Plymouth and Wanganui. The Misses Mulvany Gray have returned from a visit to Mrs Herbert Acton-Adams (Tipapa), and Miss Hilda Mulvany Gray has left for Otautau, Southland.

Mr and Mrs McGregor (Wellington) and Miss R. Morehead (Sydney) are staying at Warner's Hotel-

Mr and Mrs A. E. McDougall (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs M. P. Brown (Sydney), and Miss J. E. McGregor (Edinburgh) are staving at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr and Mrs H. L. Lavallin-Puxlev (Timaru), Rev. Canon and Mrs Pereival James (Auckland), Mrs Phillips (Windwhistle), and Mrs Hawkins (The Point) are amongst those staying at the United Service Hotel.

Lord 'and Lady Harrowby and their daughter, Lady Frances Ryder, who are at present touring New Zealand, will arrive in Christchurch from the north to-day, and will stay at the Clarendon Hotel.

Sir John and Lady Randies, who have been on a visit to the West Coast, will return to Christchurch to-day, and will stay at the United Servico Hotel. Mrs Parsons Taylor (Westmere, Kaikoura) is in town for a few days. Mr C. H. Broad, Principal of' Nelson College, left last night for Wellington, where he will spend a few days before returning to Nelson. Mr 3 William Wilson (Hokitika), who has been spending a few. days in Christchurch, has returned to the West Coast. Miss Mildred Lance, who has been spending a week in town, has returned to Horsley Downs.

Mr and Mrs W. J. Cresswell and Miss Margaret Cresswell, who have been spending some time at Lismore, are leaving early next month for a trip to England. On Monday afternoon, at 3.30, .a reception, to which members only are invited, will be given at the Canterbury Women's Club in honour of Lady Forbes-Robertson.

The Hospitality Committee of the Victoria League in London is already engaged on the compilation of lists, both of hotels and boardinghouses likely to be useful to overseas visitors, and also of hosts and hostesses desirous of offering personal hospitality to visitors from the Dominions, who are coming to London for the British Empire Exhibition. Already requests to book rooms in London for next spring are being received at Eccleston Square, the head office of the League in London. Fifty probationers of "the League of Skilled Housecraft were last month presented with certificates by Princess Beatrice. This league, "which was founded in 1922, is an effort on the part of different -women's and girls' societies to raise the status of domestic service to the rank of a skilled occupation. TXplomas are given to workers of 17 years and upwards who have been in service for at least sis months, and who succeed in passing the leaguers preliminary examination in domestic science. They are then entitled to enter for the second diploma, which makes them full members of the league. About 90 maids have passed the first preliminary examination. Mrs Loughnan (Avonside) was hostess yesterday afternoon at an enjoyable tennis party, given in honour of Lady Forbes-Robertson, who, in addition to her many other accomplishments, is a skilful exponent of tennis.
