A SYMPATHETIC MINISTER. (PRESS ASSOCrATIOIT TELEGEAM.) WELLINGTON, January 30. A deputation from the New Zealana Institute this morning requested the Minister of Internal Affairs to reinstate the research grants "formerly matie to the institute, but discontinued as a post-war measure of economy. A sympathetic reply was made by the Minister, -who promised to try to induce Cabinet to accede to the Institute's request. Dr. P. Marshall, president of the Institute, Professor Ivirk, Professor Easterficld, Dr. Cockayne, and the Hon. G-. M. Thomson stressed the value of research work. Professor lvirk said that for one thing research into tlie question. of insulators had meant a saving" of £IO,OOO a year to New Zealand alone. The Hon. G. M. Thomson spoke of research being carried out by his son with respect to a crustacean which it was thought might be of some use. Dr. Cockayne said the improvement of pastures was one of the matters now receiving attention. The Hon. 11. F.
