PERSONAL. Hiss Bona N. B. Marshall, daughter of the Rev. W. Marshall, of Tinwald, passed in t ' lc subjects of hygiene, sanitary science, physiology, and household economics in the recent home science examinations. Miss Marshall is to take up the position of home science mistress at the Ashburton High School. General News. Borough rates outstanding amount to over £4OO. Last year about £3OO represented the outstanding rates, but when comparing figures, it has to be remembered that £I6OO extra was struck this year. An elderly man, a first offender, appeared at the Magistrate's Court yesterday before Mr J. B. Christian, J.P., on a charge of drunkenness. He was fined 5s and ordered to pay 2s for cab hire.

The Ashburton East School Committee met on Tuesday, Mr E. 11. Loy presiding. A letter was received from the Education Board dealing with the appointment of Miss 11. Brown as assistant mistress. The appointment was confirmed. The Board also wrote notifying the appointment of Mr P. Hunnibell ns acting headmaster. A letter was received from the Director of Dental Hygiene stating that no nurses would be available until the end of the present year. The headmaster reported that the number on the roll was 427. Owing to the unusually large number in Standards V. and VI., a rearrangement of the class-rooms had been necessary. There was still some overcrowding in the primer classes, and it appeared as if extra accommodation would be imperative before long. A sub-commit-tee, consisting of the chairman and Messrs D. P. Kcir and W. Thompson, was appointed to confer with the headmaster on the matter. Messrs P. W. Thomas and T. Baigent were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. Bowling.

Bland are contesting the vicepresidency. Although 25 have been nominated for the committee, no election will be necessary, as the two men standing for the vice-presidency are also among the committee nominees, and the successful one for the former office will automatically drop out of the committee, leaving the required number (24).
