The Weather. The return to summer weather last week-end has continued, and the atmosphere has been exceedingly hot during the past two or three days. The recent showers seem to have had the desired effect, and most of the grain crops appear to be in a flourishing condition. The ground is very dry again, however, and more rain would be extremely weleome. Wool Sale. The second South Canterbury wool sale will be held at the Theatte Royal, Timaru, to-morrow (Thursday) evening, commencing at 7 o 'clock The order of the sale is as follows: Pyne, Gouid, Guinness, Ltd., N.Z. Loan Co., Dalgety and Co., C.F.C.A., Ltd., and National Mortgago and A. Coy. If tile sale is not completed on Thursday evening it will be continued on Friday morning. It is stated that tho offering will comprise about 13,000 bales. War Memorial. Councillor Satterthwaito suggested, at Monday's meeting of tho Timaru Borough Council, that the' War Memorial Committee could consider the question of making tho memorial to the fallen in tho shape of a new and suitable begonia house at tho Park. Such a building, housing a display of beautiful flowers, considered to be second to none in Australasia, would certainly symbolise tho Besurroction and the Light, and would bo far more suitable than raising a stono so many feet in the air. General News. .In response to a letter received from the South Canterbury Art Society, , tho Borough Council has decided to place £35 on tho estimates to provido cases for exhibits in the Art Gallery. Inquest. , The inquest on Martin Greeiish, who was found dead on the doorstep of his residence, Maude street, Tcmuka, on Sunday evening, was held int Tcmuka yesterday afternoon beforo tho Coroner, Mr E. D. Mosley. Thomas Greeiish idontified tho body S3 that of his uncle, aged about S4 Stars, He had not been attended by a doctor, neither had he complained of his health. Evidence was given by Mary Grant, William S. Grant, and Dr. A. S. MeInnes. The Coroner brought in a verdict that the deceased died from hoart failure on or absat January 27th. School Matters. A special meeting of the Timaru School Committees' Association was held on Monday evoning to eoupidor the protests made by tho Canterbury Education Board with reference to tho present system of appointment of teachers in the public schools of. tho Dominion. The meeting was attended by representatives of tho four town schools. Mr W. Gibb (president) occupied the chair. After consideration of tho Board's letter to the Minister, tho following resolution was carried unanimously:—"That this Association notes with satisfaction that the Canterbury Education Board has. forwarded a comprehensive protest to the Minister of Education against tho present system of appointment of teachers based on tho hard and fast grading schomo whereby the highest grado teacher is invariably selected for vacancies as they occur, irrespective of personal or local factors Tho present system of appointment of teachers tends to eliminate all local interest, which is detrimental to the welfare* of the education of the district heartily approving and supporting the Board's action, this Association respectfully urges the Minister to givo effect to the Board's suggestions inasmuch as it considers such alterations in the present system of tho appointment of teachers will be in the interests of the schools and tho children generally." Copies of the resolution are to be sent to tho Board, the Minister of Education, tho Department, Timaru members of the Board, and the member of Parliament for Timaru (Mr F. J. Rollcston). Court News. Many excuses wero offered in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning by two middle-aged men who came before Mr T. W. Satterthwaite, J.P., charged with drunkenness. William Mahoney, alias James Mahoney, alias MuJdoon, alias Martin, alias Nugent, who had been convicted three times in tho past six months, pleaded guilty, and immediately asked for a chance, as he had a job to go to in the country, lie had been having a few drinks before he went out harvesting, and they had upset him. He was given 15 days' hard labour. The second offender was John Patrick Keely, who had been convicted twice in the past half-year. Taking a lesson from his fellow unfortunate, he did not ask for "a chance" as ho had done. "I've been ill for some time, sir," he said, "and I'vo been drinking and haven't given myself a chance to pick up." A fine of 10s, in default 24 hours' imprisonment, was inflicted.
