EAR MADE FROM RIB.
A fabricated ear, being grown and nourished on tho back of Wilbur Jones, policeman, will shortly be grafted on his head to replaoe ono cut off threo years ago. This operation is I- : carried out by Dr. G. M. Dori ii-i.ee, at tho Women's College Hospital. "Tho first step," said Dr. Dorrance, "was to take a plaster mould of the good ear, reverse it, and cast an exact model. Tho second was to obtain o. piece of cartilage from Jones's seventh right rib, and shape it, to conform. It was worked on much as a boy might whittle a bit of wood. An incision was made in Jones's back, near tho centre, and-on a line with th© shoulder blades. The skin was lifted and the cartilago to give it life, was put under the Aiin. Then a strip of skin running from the top of Jones's shoulder to just above th© cartilage was shaped in the form of a tube, allowing the skin to have lifo. ; 'Our next step will be to continue the original incision from the shoulder until it includes tho skin and flesh which have nourished the cartilage. THiis will bo lifted from tho back as one might peel a banana. The skin and cartilage, ono end still being attached, will be raised from the back,, and then the nourishing cartilage fitted to tBo place where the ear should be and grafted to the old ear cartilage.
