MAGISTRATE'S COURT. (SFKCIAI, TO ''TITS TB2SS.") GREI'MOUTII, January 23. A sitiing of the Magistrate's Court was held to-day, Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presiding. A. youug man, charged with the theft of a postal packet, was further remanded for p. week on the application of Detective Young. . Donald Cameron pleaded guilty to a charge of entering a hotel while the subject of a prohibition order, and with procuring liquor during the currency of such order. Ha was convicted and discharged. in a rr.mber of actions taken against cyclists v.-ho had ridden 011 a footpath in Blnketown, it was contended by Mr \V. J. Joyce, counsel for defendants. The Arbitration Court award for ouarrz miners in the Kcefton district having expired, a conference has been arranged between the parties for Thurs-' day, when an endeavour will be made to frame an agreement for a further term, failing which the assistance of the Court will bo sought. Westland A. and P. Show. The Hokitika district should greatly bene'iit by the Canterbury entries at the A. and P. Show, as many of the exhibitors are disposing of their stock, which comprises stud Friesians, Ayrshires, and Shorthorns., at the conclusion of the Show. Motor-Cycling Club. The members of the Greymouth Motor-Cycling Club provided the inmates of the Old People's Home Svitli an outing as far as Cameron's yesterday morning. It was intended to go as far as Kumnra, but the rain which set in caused the programme to bo curtailed, as well as the abandonment of the club's run to Nelson Creek, which was arranged for the afternoon. Inanga&na Show. A general meeting of members of the Iniingahua A. and P. Association was held on Saturday, when there was a good attendance. Mr J. McElwee was voted to-the chair. The statement of receipts showed a credit balance of about £4, while some small liabilities still existed. Assets wjre, .estimated 'at £6O. The statemerit . was adopted. Pascoe. It was decided that a two days' show be held on Friday and Saturday, March 7th and Bth. School Excursion. The annual excursion of the combined Grey; State schools was held at Hokitika to-day, a special train conveying the children. It rivalled the State collieries' picnic in size, eighteen fullyoccupied passenger; cars being used. Ideal weather prevailed. Motor Transport. Further evidence of tho gradual penetration of the motor into the field now served by the train is to be found ia the institution of a passenger service between Grey and Reefton. Already there is a' motor passenger service between Hokitika and Greymouth. Aviation. It is rumoured that the aeroplane . now on tho Coast will shortly establish • headquarters at Greymouth, and that a parachute descent will bo made by a Cobden resident. Cost of Coal. l "We are not to blame for the high price of coal," said a co-operative miner. "The amount we receive is 25s per ton, but coal is sold at Christchurch for per ton." One, a Ford, owned by Mr Piner, was somewhat seriously damaged, while a Buick car, owned by Mr F. O'Neill, was also damaged. 1 ■ Sunshine and Sain.. For the week 'ending Sunday there were 7-i points of rain at Hokitika, and 65 hours 4 minutes sunshine. Wataroa Races. Fanners' Union. A meeting of the Ngahe're branch of the Farmers' Union was held on Satur--day* evening, Mr W. Fisher presiding. It wa3 resolved to invite the representative of the Chile Nitrate Company to address members on the advantages which would accrue to farmers generally from the use of the Company's product. 1 It was decided to give a special prize to the West Coast A. and P. Society for the best milking Shorthorn heifer.

A letter was received from the Fields Instructor regarding an ensilage demonstration at the "Waimunga State Farm. A number of members declared their intention of attending. Another letter from the same officer regarding the proposed farm school was received, an,d at was decided to ; support the proposal to have lectures alternately at Greymouth and Hokitika. •

Messrs Mulcare and Carter reported on the business transacted at the quarterly meeting of the Provincial Executive of "Wcstland, which toolc place at Greymouth last month. ' It was decided to ask the Provincial Executive to circulate the agenda paper of the quarterly provincial meetings at least one month before the date of meeting, in order that members may be better prepared to debate tho various matters brought forward. This week's attendances at the Exhibition promise to be a record. Tomorrow and Wednesday the A. and P. Show is certain to attract to the town a large number of country folk, while on Saturday a number of district excursions, from the. Grey. Valley and Otira line will bring probably the largest crowds seen in Hokitika for many years, and the Exhibition ball is set down for-Friday. night in the Soldiers' Hall. Special preparations are being made for what will probably rival the Prince of Wales ball. The closing ceremony will commence at 9.30 p.m. on Saturday, addresses being given by members of the Exhibition Council. Included in tho visitors to the Exliibi- ] tion this week are Mr J. Accident at Kanieri. . Miss D. Giles, a visitor from Danedin, badly cut her left foot while bathing in Lake Kanieri yesterday. Dr. Buchanan rendered medical attention, and the young lady was brought to Hokitika.
