BURNS NICHT. "Burns Nicht" was celebrMed at the gathering of the Scottish Society on Thursday evening. Thero was a large attendance of members and their 'friends. Chief J. S. Chisholm presided. Piper Patterson opened the programme with a selection on the Great Highland War Pipes. "AVhat I like about Robert Burns,was the title of the address given by the He v. J. .Napier Mjdne, who said that he liked the broad human sympathy of Burns, who loved ail mankind, except the hypocrite and the oppressor. Burns was tremendously sincere, and though, lie had plenty of faults, he never cloaked them, and he had told the worst ' about himself. H© was the poet of democracy and had made a great fight for freedom and the faith. Burns, IIJSO all Scotsmen, was deeply interested in religion, but the theology of his day was crude and cruel: Burns would have nothing to do with those who could consign, as the everlasting torment ' twa span long, wee, unchristened bairns." burns wis a passionate patriot and was the great prophet of international brotherhood. Mr Millie's remarks were frequently applauded. Songs were by Mr C. Bills ("Scots Wha Hao"), Mrs Scott (''Star of Robbie Burns"); Miss Barker C'Mj Am Folk"); Mr .I.'H. McClymont ("Laird o' Cockperi"'); .Mr B Wilson; recitatins were given by JVlessrs R. M. Spiers and P. Aitken. 'The Highland l'imji was danced by Miss Pope. The accompanisto was Mrs Jil. A. biTiitii At the conclusion of the address, th& Chief thaftked Mr Napier Milne for flw iino lecture. The singing of Auld Lang Syne concluded "The Nichti wi Burns."
