A gravel-pit reserve at Hampstead was tho subject of a conference yesterday between representatives of tho Borough and County Councils and Mr G. 11. Bullard, Crown Land Commissioner, as adjudicator. Messrs W. H. Woodi and R. Kerr represented the Borough Council, and Messrs W. T. Lill and C. Reid the County Council. The position is that the Borougti Council is endeavouring to obtain the title to. th lease which the County Council is opposing. Years ago the reserve was handed over to the Hampton Town Board, which body, however, failed to apply for the title, it being understood it could have got it had it done so. Eventually Hampstend was merged into the borough, but-that portion containing the reserve in question reverted to the county area. Knowing that the Hampstead Board had been granted certain rights in connexion with the reserve, the Borough Council apparently desired to automatically take them over. For some reason the County Council objected, and thus the conference was brought about. To-day tlic Commissioner heard the cases of both parties, and inspected the reserve. His decision will be forwarded in dua course.

The Allenton School has put up something of a record in winning both Bugby football and cricket primary schools' competitions in the one year. This has been accomplished without detriment to the educational aspect, aa evidenced by the excellent report presented by Inspector Brock in September, this having been one of the best schools he had inspected. This reflects great credit on the headmaster, Mr E. Partridge, who' was congratulated by the committee in attaining such a high all-round standard. To-day is Hospital Day in Ashburton.
