COUNTY COUNCILS.

LEVELS. The monthly meeting of the Levels County Council was held in Timaru yesterday. Present—Messrs C. N. Orbell (chairman), and Councillors C. .E. Kerr, X. W. Brcxsnahan, it. G. Cleliand, G. T). Selbie and T. B. Garrick. The chairman stated that the rates outstanding totalled £7870, £7920 haying been col-lcctea. The grants to be received amounted to £1165; grants from local bodies £300; and' sundry receipts £250, total JBSJS6S. The bank overdraft, alter passing- the accounts, would amount to £2349; the liabilities on contracts totalled £4079 and the final Hospital Board levy £B3B, a total of £7261. This left a balance of £2324, out of which the Council would have to -pay all .its men's wages until the end of the financial year. "We will just bo able to squeeze through," added the chairman, "and there will be nothing left over at March 31st." The Public Worts Department wrote that the. first meeting of the District Highways Council No. 1.0 would be held at the Levels Ccunty office on December 11th. Councillors should be prepared to indicate at this meeting which roads t*iey recommend should be considered for declaration as main highways. The resident engineer at Christchurch for the Public Works Department wrote that he wa3 prepared to recommend authorisation of the following works in the Levels district immediately upon, receipt cf satisfactory proposals:—Ohini and Opuha Rivers, protective work 3 at junction (£1 for £l) £250; Otipua road (£1 for £3)—£3oo. The engineer and water-race ranger submilted his report on the month's activities. The chairman said that they had to consider the main roads question. Another thin<; was the purchasing of a tractor. Councillors di:cu«sed the merits of various tractors and finally the engineer was instructed to obtain all possible information regarding tractor?. It was decided to recommend that the following roads should be for declaration as main highways : Main North road, from Arowhenua to borough boundary; Main South road from borough boundary to Lower Paroora Bridge: main Otipua. road from. Saltwater Creek to TJi>per Pareora Bridge; main Mackenzie read from Washdyke to Cave: main Totara road from Maze's Corner to B.aincliff: main Claremont road from, borough boundary to main Mackenzie road - at Sutherland.^.
