Pilcher, who is. chief officer of the Turakina, was formerly of the Kaikoura. He met with an accident in the Atlantic early last year during the voyage of the K&ikoura to New Zealand, sufierinjJ a leg fracture during a hurricane. FROM COAL TO OIL. THE LINER RUAHINE CONVERTED. The New Zealand Shipping' Company's 11,000-ton liner, Euahine, which arrived at Wellington on Sunday from London and Southampton, was converted from a coalfuel burner to an oil-burner during her four and a half months' stay at London. The Riuahino ia the third of tho company's liners converted into oil-burners, the Remuera and the Rotorua being the firet two. Todd's oil system has been installed in all three vessels, and haa proved a complete success. For the first three daya alter leaving Southampton a strong gale had to contended with, which rather spoilt tho vessel's steaming average for tho whole voyage to Wellington. When the bad weather abated tho Ruahino was averaging a steady 14 knots which she maintained for twentyfive days in eucoession. Then the Huahin® ran into further bad weather for twenty hours, during which period ehe made only 2-12 milee, as she had to be slowed down. Seeing that there was no oil fuel expert on board during the voyage Tight to Wel-i lington, the engineers, under their chief, Mr E. C. Wcotton, did remarkably irpll with the new fuel system. The ship's average speed throughout was 13- knots. It is anticipated that this will bo improved upon, on tha run Home.
