SPORTING.

Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club's Summer Meeting close on Friday.

c The dates of some of the Southland jnxtures set down for the early part of &924 have been altered. The Otautau fearing Club lias been granted permission to change the date of its Annual jMeeting from January 23rd to April fend, and the Gore Racing Chft ha 3 since received approval for fixing its Rummer Meeting a week earlier than Avas originally proposed, the dates now ihosen being January 22 nd and 23rd instead of January 29th : :.■! 30th. ! Sporting enthusiasts . i the Hurunui Jdistrict are taking a keener interest khan usual in the Annual Meeting of Khe Hurunui Turf Club, and a large ijnumobr of gallopers and trotters are ]being regularly worked in the district iwitlrthis object in view. The newlySelected Domain Board is making many 1 improvements to the grounds which Should be appreciated by visitors on Day. f Mr D. U. Seaton, whose colours were jjcairied into second place by Baldwin -'in. the Flemmgton Stakes, owns the of Bitalli and two sisters to the 'Melbourne Cup winner. Two years ago | Miss Phillina (the dam of Bitalli) Icame up for sale in Sydney. She had |a foal at foot by October, and was in |foal to the same horse. Mr Seaton acI quired the lot for 42£ guineas. How |a beautifully-bred mare came to change jfhands at such a low figure is hard to lunderstand, says an exchange. She is tbj Ruenalf from Parapet, by Lochiel |from Paraphrase, by Chester from Philjlina (imp.). Mr Seaton took a fancy to Miss Phillina becauso of her oldfashioned pedigree, which contains a double strain of Yattendon. The increased value of the maro and her proeeny may somewhat compensate Mr eaton for being deprived of a big win over Rivoli in the Melbourne Cup. The "Weekly Press and Referee" will be oa sale in Christchurch to-day, and the many readers of this popular journal would be well advised to secure a copy as early as possible, for at this season of the. year especially the demand for the paper is very keen. The fullest details of all race meetings, handicaps, acceptances, and nominations are contained within its pages, and make it a form of reference that no racing or trotting enthusiast can afford to be 'without. Antisthenes-, Wayfarer, The Rook, and Spectator each contribute columns of reading matter of vital importance to every sportsman, and correspondents from all parts of New Zealand relate items of news from their respective districts. Comments on the racing at Forbury Park last week invest the trotting pages with more than the usual amount of interest, while In Things Seen, Searchlight contributea many items ci interest. A special statis!ician supplies all the performances of horse 3 that have raced in New Zealand during the season, while trotting statistics indicate the success attained by riders, drivers, and trainers since August Ist last.
