"HARMFUL TO DOMINION."

DESIGN OF NEW STAMP.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PROTEST. That, tho design of tho new penny universal postage stamp, showing a map of New Zealand, is harmful to the Dominion was the subject of «i letter sent to tho Cl)amber of Commerce by Mr F. E. Jones, of Messrs W. H. Simma and Co. Tlio letter, which was considered at last night's meeting of that body, was as follows: — "I think tho Chamber should draw the attention of the Government to the absurdity of issuing such a stamp as tl>o enclosed. Many of these stamps will pass through all parts of the world, and will have the effect of confirming the impressions of many people that New Zealand is only a small island near to tho coast of Australia I cannot think of anything more likely to do harm to New Zealand than the issue of a stamp showing two very small islands, and I certainly think that this stamp should bo withdrawn at once. There >a tho general impression in tho United States that New Zealand is a small island, and a very small place. This stamp will confirm this impression." Mi- A. G. Henderson moved that the Council write to the Government asking that the stamp should bo immediately withdrawn from circulation, as it constituted a very poor advertisement both to tho Government and the Dominion. Mr N. M. Orbcll seconded tho motion, which was carried. Messrs Henderson and Orbell were Appointed to assist the secretary in drafting a letter to the Government in the matter.
