EXTENSION OF POWER STATION.
PREPARATORY WORK IN HAND.
As was announced some time ago, the Public Works Department has called for tenders for the tunnel at Lake Coleridge iu connexion with the extension of the power station. These tenders do not close till some time next month. In the meantime - certain preparatory work is to be put in hand immediately by the Department.
The erection of accommodation for the workmen to be engaged on tho work is to be put in hand forthwith. In connexion with tho tunnel, preparatory work is to be done in tho shapo of constructing two shafts and one adit. One of the shafts is to bo sunk at the intake and the other at the centro of the tunnel: the adit is to bo put in at the outlet end.
The extension of tho power station at Lake Coleridge, as set out in the Public Works Statement delivered by the Hon. J.-G. Coates on August 23rd last, includes tho installation of two generating units, each of 7500 k.w., which will bring the total generating capacity up to 27,000 k.w.; provision is also to be made for tsse installation of a third generating unit of 7500 k.w. As a step towards the increased capacity of tho power station transformers at the power house and transmission lines to the Addington sub-station have been completed. This leaves still to be done the tunnel, the power house extension, and the extension of the Addington sub-station. The estimated cost of the extension is £371,000.
