! ' ♦- MR THOMAS BAILIE. (?E2SS ASSOCLmOJT TEJLROBAM.) WESTPORT. December 1. Obituary.—Mr Thomas Bailie, merchant, aged 90. [Mr Bailie was born in the North of Ireland, and came out to Victoria in 1552. He was oil the Victorian goldtieids until ho was attracted to Otago by Gabriel's Gully in 1861, and he was all through the Lake diggings. He aiteruards commenced business in Invercargill, whence he removed in 1000 to Hokitika. Two years later he went to Westport. For many ye£ rs he was i) member of the Nelson Education Board, and for about ten years he was a member of the Westport Borough Council. H© was one of the first members of the Westport Harbour l>oard, on which he served two vears, and ho was also for ntany years on tne Hospital Board. Mr Bailie established himself as a general merchant •n Westport in 1867, and ho has long been closely associated with the management of the business.]
The death occurred at his residence. Invercargill, on Friday, of Mr F. Li \ ickery, who was prominently connected with the building activities of the town prior to his retirement caused bv ill-health some three years ago. The late Mr Vickerv was born in Ixmdon 77 years ago, and as a boy he took an active interest in choir work and on one occasion took part >in one of the big concerto held at the Crystal Palace. On coming to the Dominion he continued his interest in choirs and was l° r ;l T many years connected with ot. John's Church choir, Invercargill, being the leading bass singer. At time lie was also .actively associated TJith the Musical Union. Deceased k^ €S t - a w '^ ow five daughters, while his only son was severely wounded in the war and only within recent months died suddenly in Dunedin as a. direct result of his war service.
