As a sequel to the artists' ball two men were each fined £3O, in default four months/ imprisonment, on charges, of selling whisky without a license. . [The conduct of the artists' ball in the Sydney Town Hall aroused a considerable controversy in the newspapers. The police reported that tho ball was conducted on proper lines in the upstairs portion of the Town Hall, but there was unseemly behaviour on the part of men and women dancers in the overflow dance in the basement, where dancers of both sexes showed signs of over-indulgence in. liquor. Three men disguised in evening dress, and £ancy costume, were and charged with selling liquor without .a license.] ALLEGED LIBEL. (Received October 9th, 11.25 p.m.) SYDNEY", October 9. A writ has been issued against the "Sun" newspaper by Gayfield Shaw, artists' representative, claiming £SOOO dnmages for an alleged libel in connexion with certain articles published in the "Sun" concerning the recent artists' ball. « == NEW STATE MOVEMENT. ——-• : . The "New State" conference at Gleninniß decided tb ask Parliament to declare itself on the new State issue and appoint a Commission to fix -the boundaries of the new Slate. , Mr M." F. Bruxner, leader of the Progressive Party, said he intended to move in the matter. He believed that if the question were not confined to the north but extended to the whole question .of subdividing the State, the Ministry would support such a motion.
