The method'of marking cows for identification purposes adopted by one fanner in Te Awamutu district in connexion with the herd-testing operations proved a failure. He had no names for. the cows in his herd, and as the testing officer was dne next day the farmer marked the cows with a .linseed oil preparation. When the .'cattle were turned out to graze they licked the marks from each other's rumps!
