ADVERTISING ON TRAMCARS.
REVENUE V. APPEARANCES.
A -recommendation by the Tramways Committee, that authority be granted a picture company to adver-. tise. on- a special tramcar, caused some discussion at the Wellington City Council meeting last week. .Councillor W. H. Parton objected' to the ''disfigurement" of the city tram-cars by picture advertisements, and to the use of a special car to display such'advertisements. ■
Councillor H. D. Bennett Baid that the idea was that a special car be hired to advertise at £2 an hour, ami'covered in picture' advertisements. He did not like the idea very much, but' the revenue had appealed to the com. mittee. The idea was objected to by a large section of the owners of tho cars. Councillor G. Mitchell considered the suggested use of the city tram-cais was an improper one. Others would be entitled to ask a similar privilege. Councillors "VV. J. Gaudin and B. G. H. Burn supported the committee's recomendation, the latter stating that the cars would be used for only two hours (which could be allocated to a slack time) per day. The Mayor said that the question of car advertisement had been discussed before, but revenue was very desirable, and as advertising had been carried on on the cars for some time why object to the present proposal? The City Council was paying Interest and sinking fund on a large sum of money in connexion with the tramway service, which, though it would eventually bring in a return, was not. doing so at present. Tramway extensions- were being asked for, and one could not foretell how they would pay. The Council should endeavour to secure all the revenue it could. The recommendation was adopted.
