AUCKLAI/d; September 28. ; - The -Dominion award governing priateray machinists/ : etbjj; provides for the following minimum wages:— For juniors, £2 for. first year, £2 Bs for second year, £2 15s for third year. The Arbitration' Court' was' asked, to.-in-terpret the matter; the question being: Is a junior within, the meaning of the clause a, person under 21, or a person of any ago who has not served'three yeats.'•'.'it 'the trade? Mr Justice Pxazer, giving the Court's in-terpretation,--said a junior was not prentice, arid.after three years' Jservicb ;did not necessarily become a- stereotyper or"assistant stereqtyper. Ordinarily a provision was made, whereby Workers of a eimijar grade performing work that was largely unskilled, should be paid according to .age. In this case the rates suggested that :*'' junior began at 18, but; the:-parties'.had?agreed, that the basis of payment should.-be years of' service and not age; M junior, "according, to,, the award, might "therefore be of'any age. 1 - '
