CHRISTCHURCH GUN CLUB.
INTER-CLUB MATCH. On Saturday teams representing the Springeton, Ellesmere, Styx, arid Christchurch Gun Clubs met at Sookburn, in a competition for the Vale Sparrow Shield. This event is shot annually, the conditions being 10 men a side, each to shoot si IX) sparrows from 21 yards rise. A tftart was made a littlo before two o'clock, one man from each club being on the mark at one time. There were two rounds of three birds and a final of four. Right through the match the interest was intense, the scores were very eien, and not until each team had shot at 90 birds could the winners be picked. At the' end of the jurat round the scores were: Ellesmere 23 out of SO, Springstou S3>«o, Christchurch 22-30. Styx :8-SO. Styx shot better in the ecoond round. Springstou lost ground, while Elksznere and Christchurch both repeated the scores made in the first round. At the end of the second round the eoorcs were: Ellesmere 46-60, Chrißtchurch 41-60, Springeton 4Q-60, and Styx 38-60. At this stage it looked as if any of the teams might win, and tho various captains were anxious for their men to put up a good performance .in the last round of,four birds. In this round Ellesmere went to pieces, their men accounting fqr only 21 out of 40. .while Christchurch shot 29-40. When the final figures went up, the results were: Christchurch 73-100, Ellesmere 67-100, Springeton 67-100, and Styx 65-100. Tho shooting was much better than the scores indicate, because the birds were a particularly fast lot, and there wae a good stiff wind blowing across the ground. Some of the birds were impossible, while a great many which were killed fell over the boundary. The individual scores were:—
Total 65 The first sweepstake after the Tearn3 Match attracted 34 competitors, and the, money was divided by F. Graham, J. Simpson, F. Tru3cot4, C. Truscott, L. A.' Shand, and C. Jamieson, each of whom ehot 10, tho possible. There were 24 competitors in the second sweep of six birds; possibles wero secured by F. Alexander, R. S. Taylor, R. Thian, and they divided the money. The next, a double-rise sweep, was won by E.. F Stead. Mr E. H. Howell, from SpringßtcP, made a very efficient referee, and Mr Ormandy was the right man in the right placo in taking the scores of a competition which was difficult to record on the blackboards.
