FARMERS' UNION.
{srxcuL to "thb pubs.") GREYMOTJTH, September 30. After listening to ah address by Mr T. Buxton, Dominion organiser of the -Farmers' Union, the farmers of the Hokitika-Koiterangi district decided to form a branch of the Union. Over 30 joined and as the district has no t been properly canvassed, it is expected that a great many more will become members. -, Hockey Tournament. A five-aside Ladies' Hockey Tourna ment is to bo held at Blackball next Saturday. Eighteen teams have entered. League Football. _ The League competitions were continued at the week-end. In the School's competition Runanga beat Ngahere and Nelson beat Combined by 30 points to three, and thus have won the Shield In the same grade Brunner beat Blackball by 11 points to three. Playing at Cobden in the senior grade, Waiuta beat Blackball in the final of tho Knock-Out Cup, by three points to nil. - Blackball played six of, tho junior team, who recently toured Canterbury. The game was fast, but somewhat ragged arid Waiuta was luckv to win as Blackball narrowly missed scoring on several occasions in tho second spell. Cutbush scored for the winners in the first spell, but C. McElweo failed to convert. A. McElwee also missed two easy kicks from close up. The second spell was fairly even, but time sounded with Blackball right on their opponent's line. Mr C. Ffaser was' referee. • Rugby Football. A handful of people gathered at Victoria Park to seo a coup!© of typical erid-of-the-s'easori 'games'.'- Itumara seniors 18 beat United 8. The local team played two men short. Technical fourths beat Star by six points to nil. Gore and Magee scored tries for the winners: The Marist-Uriited game was abandoned owing to neither club putting a team in the field. Iriangahua, who challenged Westland for the Dittman Shield, were beaten by the homo team yesterday at Hokitika, before a fair crowd of spectators. The weather was warm and the attendance moderate. In the first Bpell Westland backs dominated the play and Inangahiia \Vas 21 points behind at half time. Bannister scored three tries and Coughlan two, and Bannister kicked a penalty goal arid converted three trios. Westland's sole score in the second spell was a try by Wooan and E. Powley kicked a penalty goal for Inangahua in this half. The visiting forwards surprised the spectators after half time by dashing play, tho Westland'3 backs tiring. Mr Dowcll was referee. BJaketown-Greymouth drew with Kiwi, the scores being 3 all.
Accidents. A small son of Mr Woods, of Cobdon was admitted to the hospital yesterdaj with a badly crushed foot. Thomas Collins, an employeo at the foundry,' had his foot badly crusned bj the wheel of a trolley conveying heavy girders passing over it. His injuries are such, as will incapaciato him for a considerable time. Bowling. The local bowling season was opened yesterday afternoon at the Greymouth Bowling Club's green. The opening was originally fixed for Wodnesday, but was postponed owing to rain. Mr J, Steer, president of the club, made a brief speech, after which a match was pjoydfl between teams chosen by tho president : and tbe , the vice-president's toam winning by 105 to 102. Golf. Tbe lady members of the local golf clnb played a -competition yesterday for the Simpson Oup, when- Miss MeJdrum, daughter of Mr W. Meldrum, SJft,. was successful. l)he four highest fiet .scores, were Miss* Meldrum SI, Miss Grifferi 85; Miss Wylde 87, and Mrs Eitchisghsm 87.
