A "midnight express" was the term applied by Mr J. Butler, in his address on logging at the Auckland liotary Club lecture on Monday, to the improvised locomotives which were occasionally used by the bushman to haul the logs from the bush to the nuTT some 40 years ago. They were called "midnight expresses" because when thoy • were taken out in the morning it was never known when they would nome back. One of these engines saw 15 years' continuous service, running into the depths of the bush each morning, employed to run the winches at the scene of tree-felling, nnd used to U"--l back the locs to the mill at night.
