FLYING FISH AND SHIP.

Officers of the steamship Kentucky, which arrived at Melbourne recently, recount strange experiences with flying fish between Panama and the island of Rapa. Every morning for several days, they said, the cabin "bull's eyes" were surrounded by a circle of fish scales. It appears that flying fish attracted by the light from the port-holes, flew toward the illumination. "Possibly they were asking for a passage," explained a junior officer. "They certainly were," remarked the first officer. "As a matter of fact, one big fellow made a forcible entry. '' Having flown' about 200 yards, the longest distance I have ever seen a flying-fish achieve, this fellow, with large red pectorals like a gannet, flew on board and went slap into the en-gine-room, where he smote the engineer a smart rap on the cheek.
