Mrs Walter Scales (Merivale) has returned from a visit to relatives in Ashburton. The wedding was celebrated at St. Joseph's Church, Eltham, recently, the Rev. Father Moore officiating, of Miss Mary Quin, eldest daughter of Mr J. T. Quin, "The Highlands," Elthr.'n, and Mrs Quin, and Sir Hugh O'Reilly, youngest son of the late Mr Francis Philip O'Reilly, _ Southland and Otago, formerly of Leitrim, and cousin to the late Lord Plunket, and Mrs Alice O'Reilly. The Beckenham Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade met on Tuesday evening, there being a good attendance , of membeils, in charge of Mrs M. Cordy, lady superintendent. The general business of the evening was quickly disposed of, and the members devoted tho rest of the evening to roller bandaging. The annual West Coast golf tournament, to be held this year at Westport, will probably begin on or near August 22nd. As a very large number of entries are expected, it has been decided to extend the tournament over four days instead of three, as in previous years. The first day will, however, be devoted to ladies' events. Madame and Mdlle. Verbrugghen. were through passengers by the Niagara (sayS the Auckland""Star"). They hope to meet M. Verbrugghen at Vancouver, but their latest advice of the noted musician was that his first operation had not proved altogether successful, and he was to undergo another at an early date. M. Verbrugghen is wellknown in New Zealand as the conductor of the New South Wales State Orchestra, which toured the Dominion last year. Owing to the Art Gallery being engaged for another function, the Rosemary Jazz Club . will not hold their usual weekly dance to-night. On Thursday, July 19 th, a plain and fancy dress carnival will be held. Prizes will be awarded for the best : ladv's costume, the best gentleman's costume, the most original and the most amusing costumes. Dancing will continue till 1 a.m. to the music of Willyams's Jazz Band and several specially chosen items will be offered by the orcnestra, including the "Rosemary One Step/' specially composed for this carnival. An exhibition dance will be given by Mr Furness James and partner. A musical treat was given, on Tuesday evening, when a concert party, organised by Miss Linda Oakley visited the Ashburton County Hospital. A splendid, programme was submitted, and very much appreciated by the patients and staff. Those who contributed items were Mrs McDonald (violin solos), Miss GFalbraith (musical monologues, songs), Mrs Craighead, Miss Oakley and Mr Silverwood (duet), Miss Oakley and Mr Silverwood (recitations), Miss Brown ('cello solo), Mr M. Robilliard (piano solos), Mr Barnett. Miss..Galbraith aoted as accompaniste. Mr" Gallagher, a member of the Hospital Board, thanked the performers. . very enjoyable afternoon and evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. Various speakers at the annual conference of the Australian Dancing Teachers' Association pointed to the obvious decline of the jazz style. It was said there was a growing public demand for a lead in some uniform and graceful style of dancing similar to that of the prerjazz era, though there was no general demand for a revival of the actual old-time dancing. The fact that the latest dance, "The Chicago," contained not a single jazz movement was freely commented upon. The consensus of opinion, the teachers said, expressed a desire for something simpler and more rhythmic than "The Chicnizo." It was noted that a marked j'reference existed for the two-step style of dancing. Mrs Annie Susannah Sargisson, wile of Mr J. W. Sargisson, an old settler of Wairoa, passed away recently at the agr of 77 years. The deceased lady was born in London, was married there, and came out with her husband in the ship Pleiades in 1878. They settled first in Napier, where Mr Sargisson was for some time accountant at Blythes, Ltd., then W. It. Blythe, and later in Wairoa. Mrs Sargisson is survived by her husband, two married sons (Percy W Sargisson, Gisborne, and Cecil M. Sargisson, manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Westport), two married daughters (Mrs E. J. Green, Wairoa, and Mrs A. Hague, Wairoa),- also numerous grandchildren. She had two brothers (the Rev. F. Stubbs, F.R.G.8., whose life is mostly devoted to literature, and Mr G. Stubbs, Napier), and three sisters residing in England. MUSICAL AT HOME. » . It was a defight to pass last night from the dreary, depressing weather conditions prevailing outside to the e sy comfort of the reception room at tho Canterbury Women's Club, where Mrs H. S. Batchclor and Mrs A. Young were hoste ses at an enjoyable musical evening. Big fires and largo bowls of chrysanthemums and autumn-tinted foliage lent a festive air to the room. St. John's Church, Te Karaka, was recently the scene of a v«ry pretty and popular wedding, the contracting parties being Alice Irene Lilly, second daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Lilly, of Oxford, and Frederick Hobbs, younger son of Mrs Hobbs, of Takapuna, Auckland. The church had been prettily decorated by girl friends of the bride, and the service was fully choral. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of Mr W. Veitch, wore a charming gown of brocaded satin and georgette with touches of silver, and the usual veil and crange blossoms, with a wreath of silver. She carried a bouquet of chrysanthemums and roses. The bridesmaid wore a dainty frock of apricot georgette with hat and shoes to match, and carried a bouquet of the same ooloured chrysanthemums. Mr B. Swainson acted as best man. After the ceremony the bridal party the future home of the bride and bridegroom, whei'«. after the reception, the happy couple left) for Rotorua, Waitomo, and Auckland, where their honeymoon was to be spent.
