ROYAL SOCIETY PROFESSORSHIPS. (BT CABLE—PRBBB ASSOOIATIOK—COFTOQBT.). (AUSTBAIJAN AMD }7. Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, July 10. The Council of the Royal Society announces that it has decided to use the linger part of Sir Alfred Yarrow's gift of £IOO,OOO in founding professorships, the holders of which will be expected to devote their whole time to scientific reaearoh, except that they may pJVe a limited course of instructioit in the subjects of their research to advanced students,. The intention is to recognise research aa p. definite profession, instead of a secondary pccupation for men whose primary occupation is teaching. ("Sir Alfred the well-known shipbuilder, gave the Royal Society £IOO,OOO for scientific research, preferably to be used to anf, scientific workers by adequate payment and'the supply of apparatus rather than the erection of costly buildiags.i
