Mr Heaps received the appointment in 1891, while in the Customs Department, which he joined in 1864, and he is thus one of the oldest Government officials in tho Dominion. In 1881 Mr Heaps was transferred from Wellington as Collector of Customs at Nelson, and has resided here ever since. Mr Heaps's resignation will date as from March 31st, 1924, he having been granted leave of absence in the meantime. At the end of that period Mr Heaps will have completed 60 years' service in the employ of the Government—a record of which few can boast. Mr F. Mitchell, Deputy-Sheriff, will act as Sheriff pending a successor being appointed.
