SAM WELLER "SWARRY."

CHRISTCHURCH WORKING MEN'S CLUB. The social hall of the Christchurch Workingmen's Club presented a gay appearance last night on the occasion of the annual Sam Weller "Swarry." The hall was plenteously decorated with bunting, and the tables were brightened by a display of pot plants. There was a large attendance over which Mr J. E. Petlieriek, happily recovered from his recent accident, presided. Apologies were received from Messrs J. J. .uougull, li. U. Hisnop, X. Oiai'lison, G. iliciiinott, C. D. Morns, Hugh Douglas (manager "Wellington W.M.0.), aud G. H. Katterns (Auckland W.iV1.0.). Representatives from the Richmond, Lyttelton, Kaiapoi, and Oxford VVorkmgmen's uluos were amongst the guests present. The principal dish was the every popular "biled mutton and trimmins," and later in thfc evening when harmony prevailed, the old-time "churchwardens" were handed round and were soon in full blast. The president, on rising to propose '■The King and Royal Family," was received with renewed warm applause. The toast was loyally honoured. Mr A. Peverill, in proposing "The Press," took the opportunity, as a past president, to welcome back the president on his recovery from the severe accident ho had undergone. He was pleased to see that he had come out ofit, as he usually did, "on top." Speaking to the toast he referred to the Press, of New Zealand: ,as clean and above-board. "Success to the Club and its Founders" was felicitously proposed by ,Mr T. Collins, who remarked' that 'the acquisition of the founders of the club of such a valuable site for the club house, .was a perpetual memorial of their foresight, and their pluck. Mr A. E. Rose fittingly responded. Other toasts were: "The Army - and Navy," proposed by Mr J. E. Cooper, and responded to by Major J. P. Oakes, "Kindred Olubs," proposed by Mr \V. Toy, and responded to by the visiting "President, Officers, and Committee," proposed by Mr G. W. Lloyd, and responded to by the president; and "The Performers," proposed by Mr C. C. "Warner, and responded to by Mr T. Cooper.; During the evening vocal and other items were given by Messrs C.' Brown, W. Bischlarger, A. Mizen, F. Hale, H. Hessey, D. Chapman, T. Cooper, T. McGee, J. Falvey, P. Donaldson, A. Butterfipld, T. Puddle, H. B. Hubbard, and T. Tankard.
