THE COAL SHORTAGE.
WEST COAST SUPPLIES. (special to "ran press.") WELLINGTON, July 10. In the House of Representatives today Mr J. O'Brien (Westland) gave notice to ask the Minister of Railways whether, in view of the serious shortage of_ coal in Christchurch, he would allow coal to be 'railed direct from Greymouth to Christchurch through the Otira tunnel at through rates, instead of the three-section rate now in operation, Mr D. G. Sullivan. (Avon) has been informed that the State depot at Christchurch was able to fill orders up till Friday last. Since then a cargo of coal has been despatched from Greymouth to Lyfctelton. This will last only ten days, it may be three months before there is a normal supply from Newcastle, as the Australian stocks will have to be built up before, there will be much coal available for New Zealand. The New Zealand State Coal Department has meantime communicated with the Reef ton Company, which is prepared to supply some unscreened coal to Christchurch if it can be sent through by tiie Otira route at a commercial rate. The Department has instructed the Chnstchureii depot to limit each customer to two bags of coal meantime, except in cases of sickness or emergency.
