The Waitapu, from PacSo Coast ports, sailed from San Francisco on June 21st for Wellington, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Syd-. ney. She is due at Wellington about the 17th July. The Wairuna, en route from Newcastle, ■via Fanning Island, is due at Vancouver about July 14th. She mil lead at Pacifio Coast ports during Jul; for Auckland, Melbourne, Adelaide end Sydney. THE HOWRA.

The B.L steamer Ho via arrived here yesterday morning after a rough passage from Auckland. She has for discharge here bulk sulphur, motor spirits and general cargo. The Howra was built by W. Armstrong, Whitworth and 'Co., Newcastle, last year. Her gross tonnage is 6700 tons, and when loaded she carries about 10,000 tons deadweight. She is a cruiser stern vessel. feet long, with a 59 feet beam and a <& feet depth. Her single screw is driven by Parsons' double reduction gear turbines. Captain T. C. Weatherley is in command of the Howra, and he has with him the fol" lowing officers:—Chief, Mr P. A. Jamesi second, Mr R. Stumble*; third, Mr W. T. Hurst; oadets, Messrs Mutfford and Pinegar; chief engineer, Mr W., Mackenzie; sec ond Mr J. W. Dobio; third, Mr A. McIntyre; fourth, Mi- W. A. Christmas; fifth, Mr N. W. Holman; purser, Mr A. Brown; wireless operator, Mr P. McManmoa.

IMPROVING THE WAIRAU BAR.

(F33SS ASSOCIATION TSMSQBAM.) BLENHEIM, July 9. A recent arrival at Port Wairau wsa tho ketch Standard, which was purchased in Auckland by Mr E JR. Eckford, on behalf of Mcests E. Eckford and Co., for the purpose of being fitted up as a suction dredg* to improre the Opawa river and Wairau bar for navigation purposes. The vessel, which has a register of 12 tons gross and 9 tons net, had * /stormy passage of 14 days from Auckland. She is eirpeciod to be ready for dredging purposes in about three weeks. Messrs Eckford and Co., who maintain the shipping trade between Blenheim and Wellington, anticipate that the dredge will effect a substantial improvement in the river from tho point of view of navigation, and indirectly from the point of view of flood relief.
