CASUALTIES.
While undergoing an operation at tho Public Hospital early yesterday morning, Hoy Litchener "aged 6J years, son of Mrs R. Cbegrove, Ashley street, Kangiora, collapsed under the amesthetic. The lisual methods of restoration were applied without success, and the child died about 10.30 a.m. An inquest will be held at a time to be fixed to-day. The condition of Ernest Empson, who was admitted to the Ciiristchurch Hospital on Wednesday night as the result of a fall from a tram at New Brighton, is only fair. (PRESS ASSOdATIOK TELEGBAM.) AUOKLASTJ, July 6. At the inquest on Mrs Miriam Smith, who died in the hospital as the result or drinking a poisonous liquid, Daniel Smith, her husband, deposed that ho found his wife in great pain. She told him that she had taken some poison stuff out of a bottle, adding, "I hnve made- si mesa of things. I did not know what I was doing. lam sorry now.'' He rang up for a doctor frequently. There was a long delav before a doctor attended his wife. They lived happily together. His wife had !>eori of late, but never talked of suicide. The inquest was adjourned.
