DOPED WHISKY.

TRAP FOR THIEVES,

SYDNEY, April 27,

By doping a bottle of whisky and leaving it in a prominent place in his shop, a Sydney draper has been successful in trapping thieves in his shop. On several occasions recently the shop had been visited by thieves, and, each time goods and some liquor leit in a cupboard were stolen. Tired or losing his beer and spirits, the draper decided to place a chemical in a bottle of whisky, and leave it for the next visit of the thief. The shop was broken into on Wednesday night. When the arrived on Thursdav morning he found that his shop had been broken into, and a quantity of goods stolen, including the bottle of doped whisky. He reported the matter to the police. The next episode was at hospital. A man turned up at one of the public hospitals at about three o'clock in the morning and complained of feeling very .ill. He' asked for some soda water. The doctor in charge examined him and found that he had drunk a chemical which had caused him much inconvenience internally. He admitted him. After the matter was reported to the police, enquiries were made concerning the dope and its effects. The police arrived at the conclusion that the man would have to seek medical aid, and enquiring at the different hospitals, came across the man, who was affected as they suspected. Subsequently the goods taken from the shop were found not far away. It appears that while the man was in the shop he drank some of the whisky, and later became affected when only a little distance from the shop. A charge has been laid against him.
