TECHNICAL COLLEGE.
The Technical College Board of Governors met on Friday night. Present-Messrs C. H. Opic (chairman), G. Franklin, F. E. Coolie, E. H. Andrews, H. T. Armstrong, M.P., 'J. H. Price, W. R. Gahagan, J. W. Graham, McGregor Wright, and Mrs H. F. Herbert.
Before the business of the meeting was begun the chairman congratulated ,those members who had been succssful candidates at tho municipal elections. The chairman reported that tho annual conference of technical college boards would be held in Wellington on May Kith, 17lb, and ISth. These dates had been fixed in order to allow those who wished to do so to go to Christchurch for the Canterbury Coilegs jubilee celebrations. Lcgisiatir.a in which tho college* was deeply interested was being introduced into 'Parliament this year in the ippmitiee and Vocational Training Bill. It had been recognised for some yens past that the apprentice system in voguci needed a. thorough revision. It was hoped that tha side school would be in the Board's possession before the second term wasi spent. The additional land and class-rooms thereby provided would mean much towards the case of working and efficiency of the fenool. Belter rihysical training was still an urgent necessity, and as soon as additional land WH3 available tho matter would lie dealt with. The report was adopted.
The director reported „..at- a team of girls fiom the college had won the Monica Thacker Shield for life-saving. A swimming class for boys had been formed, and fifty were attending the Tepid Batli3 each week, partly ill the. : r own ' and partly in the school's time. A number of the sonior pupils wero candidates for the teachers' D examinations to bo held in August, and to assist them a class in the theory of music had been formed. The number of candidates for the examinations at the end of the year would be considerable. The marks to hand in tho last matriculation examination showed that for the third year lr succession one of the college pupils had trained highest marks for the South. Island in freehand and geometrical drawing. The report, was adopted.
.Several reports detailing routine work done since the last weeting wore also adopted.
