In the Koyal Society, Edinburgh Lmversity has what is claimed to be the oldest organisation of the kind in the Empire, if not in the world. It was founded in 1734, when six students met in a tavern for mutual improvement, and it has continued to flourish ever since, passing through its ranks practically every student of medicine who takes his work seriously. The number of medical theories that during these 200 years have been propounded and demolished with the Society's walls is probably beyond computation. Its discussions have been more beneficial to the members than much they heard from the professors, and have never been hampered by undue -respect for the professional orthodoxy of the day. The Society has premises of its own, with a library of 30,000 volumes, and election to its presidency is regarded as the greatest honour that can befall a student.
