Saturday's Football Matches. In the senior competitions Old Boys (11) defeated Celtic (0) in a scrambling game, in which the winners' backs occasionally handled well. Rain made the ground very slippery, and intermittent showers throughout the match made matters very unpleasant. Soon after the commencement Old Boys attacked, and from a mark G. Lawson kicked a good goal. Celtic made the game a tight forward one, and scrambling forward play continued until D. Lawson snapped up the ball as it came out of a scrimmage, and dived over in the corner. The kick failed. Old Boys continued to attack, and D. Lawson again secured the ball from a scrimmage near the Celtic line, sending it to N. Lawson, who passed to Mason, who gave Gillies a clear run over. ■ G. Lawson converted. Celtic played better at the beginning of the second spell, but tired towards the end of a gruelling forward spell, in which there was no further score. Mr J. Harley was referee. Zingari (15) defeated Waihi (0). From the commencement of the game Zingari proved themselves the superior team. The ball was difficult to handle, and the grounds being soaked, little passing work could be done. Early in, tho first spell McWhirter scored for Zingari, but no goal was kicked. A little later. McWhirter '' dummied'' a pass, slipped in, and scored. Gibbs failed to convert. In the second spell play hovered for a time on the Waihi goal-line. The Zingari forwards pressed hard, and Campbell scored, P. Ward failing to convert. Again Zingari followed up strongly, but off-side play relieved Waihi, who were hard pressed. Shortly afterwards Quirke found the line for Waihi, and the lino-out looked like resulting in a try, but Henderson secured the ball, and Bcored for Ziu* gari. McWhirter missed with tho kick. A spell of fairly fast play followed, Waihi forcing the pace. _ Following on a serum on the Waihi goalline, P. Ward (Zingari) retired hurt. A little later McWhirter scored again, but the try was not' converted, arid the game ended with the scores Ziri. gari 15, Waihi 0. Tcmuka (8) defeated Star (0), at Temuka. Three Star men retired hurt. '

CLANDEBOYE. Despite the ■■' inclemency _ of . the weather, there was a very fair attendance at the Clandeboye carnival on Thursday, last. An energetic Commitr tee had "all arrangements well in hand, and a comprehensive and varied programme was completed without a hitch. In the evening a plain and fancy dress ball was held in the hall. The chairman of the Committee, Mr W. H. Staniland, in presenting; the trophies won during the day, thanked the public for their support, which he said had supplemented.the efforts of the Committee in ensuring a successful carnival. The takings for the day, a little over £7O. must be very gratifying to all concerned.
