The Ashburton Athletic Club opened its season with a very successful tournament on Saturday night, and, in spite of the heavy, bitterly cold rain, there was a largo attendance. Thoso present were rewarded by witnessing good displays of scientific boxing by the novices who took part in the numerous bouts. The results were: Flyweight—C. Winder 6st 12lb (Hinds), beat W. Prendergast (Longbeach), 6st 2lb. Lishtweight—C. Stevenson 9st lllb (Ashburton), beat C. Hughes 9st 13l'b (Ashburton); M. McAvey 9st 131b (Ashburton), a bye. Stevenson easily beat McAvey in the final. Welter-weight—Hepburn 10st (Ashubrton), beat Hearn lOst alb (Christchurch); B chelor lOst 3lb (Christchurch), beat Pocock lOst 21b (Ashburton). The final between Hepburn and Bachelor was very evenly contested, and after, an extra round Bachelor was declared the winner. Pe.ithcrwei-.rht—n. The New Zealand iioxtng Council lias given notice that, in viow of the approaching Dominion Championships, it is essential that immediate steps should bo ta.ken to ensure the establishment in Dunedin of a local controlling body affiliated to the Council, in default of which the Council will take tuch steps as it deems necessary. The Otago Association has suggested to the Minister for Internal Affaire that an Advisory Committee oomprising Mr R. W. MoVilley of the Wellington, Association), one representative of the Boxing Council, Mr Emerie (Timaru), and a fourth memiber to be nominated by the Minister should bo appointed to meet in Wellington and hear the evidence of the representatives of the Otago Association, who are prepared to abide by the committee's decision.
