Albion (17) v. North Canterbury (3). This game was played at the Show Grounds, North Canterbury kicking off. The play was very ragged for awhile, though Albion were a. man short, they seemed to be a little superior, but from, a spectacular point of view the game was uninterestingFoster sayed well for Albion, and, after some scrambling play, Dennis scored, out Pitt's kick at goal missed. North Canterbury rallied, and although play was pretty even, Byan managed to score for iNorth Canterbury, but the kick at goal missed; Albion were making some good attempts to cross the line, and it looked as if _ Foster was going to be the means of scoring another try for Albion, but the movement failed, and the half-time score was 3 all. Albion attacked on resuming, and a kick by -Foster, which was well followed up, looked like producing a try; but overanxiety spoiled a'good opportunity. However, their next attempt was more successful, as Baker, who came on at half-time, got over from a melee, • the kick at goal being unsuccessful. North Canterbury pressed for awhile, but Foster, taking a good mark, had a fruitless attempt at goal. Albion seemed to dominate tho game at this stage —Rutherford getting possession from a scramble, after a line-out, pushed his way over to score a good try; the attempt to convert again failing. From a rough and tumble in their own twenty-five, North Canterbury were awarded a free kick, several players thought this a wrong decision, but after an illustration had been given of what happened, the referee ordered a scrum. Albion obtained possession, and Pitt was unlucky enough to receive a kick on the shin, which necessitated his removal from the field. From this out Albion were showing their superiority, and Baker, gettingpossession, scored another try, Montgomery's kick adding the extra points. A few minutes later Oldridge made the most of an opportunity and added another try to Albion's score placing, the issue bevond doubt, as there remained only a few minutes before the end of tho game. Albion were still in North Cp-rterbury's. twenty-five as time called. The final score was: Albion 17, North Canterbury .3.1 Mr W. Dug;ra.n was referee.

CANTERBURY RUGBY LEAGUE.

SECOND ROUND. Tho second round of the competitions was played on Saturday, and thoujh the turf was greasy and the grounds heavy from tho rain before coon, the conditions were most favourable for the players, and thero were some closely-contested games played. Tho principal interest centred in the games lor tne senior premieislnp, the Addiugton and Sydenham match and the KaiapoiJdornuy fixture. In an even game tnai was interesting to witness, though lacking in the sparkle and brilliancy that will develop with the season's advance. The Addington team were euccessiui against their opponents by a try and a goal. They were fortunate, 03 bydenham nad the best of the game, and but for some use.ess kicking by their fcrwards they should have won. Woolston beat Linwood in a hard forward game, and their success was due to the weakness of the Linwood centre backs and lack of combination. Tho Woolston team are improving and will fully extend the rest of their opponents. A hard struggle between Kaiapoi and Hornby, at Kaiapoi, was won by the home team by one point, their score being obtained by. three penalty goals to a converted try, and their success caused an exciting finish. The results were aa follows: —

Addington (7) v. Sydenham (2). These teams met at Sydenham Park, and after a closely-contested game, in which both teams did not produce a high standard of football, Addington won by a try, which was converted, and a penalty goal to a field goal. Sydenham had the best of the game in the concluding stages, but kicking the ball instead of passing was to the advantage of their opponents. P. Matthews set play in motion, and the opening movement was a passing rush by Brown, Watt, Symister, and Sanders for Addington, which burst through tho defence, and Sanders kicked low past Coomber, and in a mixed rush over the Sydenham line McLeod scored, for Sanders to goal. The Sydenham backs were making every effort to open up the play, but H. King, passing wildly, let the Addington forwards up. Marshall, Coomber, and Molloy had play in the Addington twenty-five, the last-named being stopped by G. Falgar. Coomber drop-kicked a fine goal for Sydenham. A strong rush by McLeod, Collie, and McKibbin went right back to the Sydenham line, but over-eager-ness brought a penalty for Sydenham's relief. Matthews beat his oppenents cleverly, and with P. King, O'Connor, and H. King broke through, but the latter lost a score by a bad pass to Davidson. The Addington forwards cleared their territory, and from a penalty in the vicinity of halfway Sanders kicked a goal. A passirg rush by tho Sydenham bocks looked promising, but O'Connor missed the ball, and Brown, Watt, and Sandors broke away, Coomber saving well. McLeod, Collie, and Watt went right to Sydenham's lino and Coomber again saved well as half-time arrived.

A strong rush by the Addington forwards recommenced play, and from a penalty in the 'Sydenham twenty-five Sanders just missed the goal. Following a dashing passing rush by Matthews, P. King, Clegg, and Davidson, the latter made a great effort to score, but G. Palgar saved with a brilliant tackle, and Watt sent play clear of the line. Good passing enabled the Sydenham backs to clear, and Sanders effected a timely save in overpowering Davidson. O'Connor lost a fine opening by kicking, and from a penalty Cbomber'B effort at goal went wide. H. King intercepting, an Addington rush broke clear, but he kicked high and lost his side a scoring chance. Sanders was prominent for Addington and bur3t through, but P. n King effected a timely save. A combined effort by the home team forwards went right through, and from a penalty in a good position Matthews failed at goal. F. King put his. backs into position, but Watts saved by safe collaring, and a cessation of play was caused through Watt being injured. Sydenham, were making strong efforts to score, and a fast bout of passing let Davidson away, he being pushed out near the corner flag shortly before the whistle sounded, with Addington successful by a try, which, was converted, and a penalty goal—-seven points—to two, a field goal. Mr J. Worrall was referee.

Woolston (11) v. Linwood (6). At "Woolston the ground was in good order, hut just a little soft. The opening exchange! loft Woolston with an advantage and two kicks from marks ,went outside. Ferris, Smith and Beaumont took the ball right up to Linwood's line, but Harvey intercepted audi sent play back. Fisher, C. Moulin and Harvey broke away in a rush, and from a long kick, the ball bounced against the Woolston backs and Harvey Bcored; Kinley's kick missing. Woolston, much surprised, made determined efforts, Harper being conspicuous in the Greens' defence, but Thompson secured and a dash made score 3 even. Watson missed with the kick. Smith saved his side from a tight corner, and after a, series of scrums right on the line, Woolston forced. Ferris made a strong- run, evading seven players, and scored in a handy position, but Corkin's kick went wrong.

Woolston set a strong pace after the interval, and Harris dived through and scored before Linwood realised where they were. Ferris converted. Kelly made a run from his own twenty-five and out-3printed Woolston, scoring wide out. Kinley mi»sed the kick. Harper and N. Moulin cleared from Thompson and Sullivan, and McLacnlan sent Kelly away. Play hovered in centre for a spell, ne'ither side being ao!e to break through, and the game ended: Woolston 11, Linwood 6. Mr T. Kirton was referee.

Kaiapoi (6) v. Hornby (5). Playing at Kaiapoi, the local team beat Hornby after a hard game, chiefly confined to the forwards, by three penalty goa.s to a try which was converted. Kaiapoi won the choice of position, and controlling die ball in the scrum, a passing rush, by the Hornby back ended in Davis knocking on in the local twenty-five. Lodge marked and the effort at goal just failed. Turnbull was prominent for Kaiapoi, and the Hornby forwards infringing, P. Lynskey placed a goal. Hard rushes by the Hornby forwards carried play over the line, but kicking too hard spoilt their work shortly before the interval. The visitors resumed with a strong forward rush, and- a passing bout enabled Woodgate to score, and Parkes converted try. C. Beck and F. Lynskey carried play to the Hornby twenty-five and the visiting forwards getting offside, Lynskey kicked a goal. The local team renewed their attack, a shot at goal from the field by Tbackwell going close. The Hornby forwards becoming over-eager, were penalised, and Lynskey placed a fine goal from the line. The reverse infused some vigour in the visitors and a solid rush saw Bryce held up on the line. Hornby made repeated efforts to score, but the defence held and with excitement high, the whistle sounded with Kaiapoi 6 poinds (3 penalty goals) to Hornby 5 points (a try and a -goal). Mr J. J. Stevens was referee'.
