UNION COMPANY'S COASTAL SERVICE. The Union Steam Ship Company proposes to extend its coastal services to a port hitherto not included in its extensive initerary. It is onnounoed that in ail probability (if BUiScient oargo is offering from South Island merchants and manufacturers) a steamer wili be placed on the loading berth at Dunedin towards the end of May for Tauranga, the principal port in the Bay of Plenty. The steamer will call at Oamaru, Timaru, Lvttelton, Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne on the way north. The first loading will be really a 'trial fixture, and it is hoped "that the support will be sufficient not only to warrant the starting but als? the oontinuanoe of this additional coastal service. It is expected that the eteamer to be utilised will bo the Eini, which has been engaged in the cargo trad© b&tween Dunedin, Napier, and Gisborne via way ports for some past.

MOTOR SHIPS. INCREASE IN 1922. The year 1922 waß marked by another increase in tlid wond'e tonnage of motor vesaeia built. It is 6-igiuncaiit that durm_ the general snipbuiiaiug slump and the wnsequenc Jow price per ton asked by steamer builders, trie oil-engined vessel, at a higher cost per, ton, should be in BUoh demand. The following figures given by the latest bulletin of the British Department of Overseas 'Hade, will, throw eome light on the trend in this direction. (It is gratifying to note incidentally that the United Kingdom stands at the head of the list of motor shipbuilding countries.) The total deadweight tonnage built during 19-22 was 429,465 tons against 333,475 tons in <• 1921. The machinery power installed in these vessels has increased' from an aggregate of 126,509 to 164,785 indicated horse-power; moreover, the corresponding figures for 1921 were approximately 60 per cent, in (excess of those recorded in 1192& The United- Kingdom contribution for 1923 was 21 vessels, totalling 181,750 tonß deadweight, against 14 ships, of 116)850 tons for 1921. Germany's contribution for'the corresponding years being 87,200 tons and 27,300 tons respectively. "These latter figures," says the bulletin, "are an indication of the remarkable increase, of Germany's tonnage in oil-engined vesEels. -It is further significant that the tonnage of individual ships has considerably increased. Orders have been placed for cargo vessels of 21,000 tons deadweight ■ and also for a passenger liner of 22,000 tons deadweight. There i 3 every evidence that for moderate sized cargo vessels, the oil-engined ship, compared with the steamengined vessel, is now far and away the more economical in running coats."

AUCKLAND'S LARGE TRADE.^ "The past year wa» *me 'of severe depression in traae, but the Boara hob mmo through it exceedingly! well/' said Air it. K. Mackenzie, cnamiian of tlie Auckland Harbour Board, m his annual repoit. "It is evident now that the tide has turned, and all indications point to greater prosperity during 1923. "Auckland harbour now holds the premier position among the ports of the Dominion in regard to the amount ol cargo handled, both inward and outward. Tne imports, according to the Goveramcm statistician's figures, last year amounted to 1,080,08? tons, the exports to 331,419 tons, and transhipments to 60,358 tons, making a total of 1,471,804 tons. More cargo is handled per day at this port then at any other port in the Dominion, and the port has the reputation of being able to give vessels better despatch. The value of the imports waa £12,496,203, and of exports, £9,595,225. "There waa a decided improvement in the shipping returns, the increase over the 1921 arrivals being 477 vessels, with an increase in the net tonnage of 41,06?. All shipping was handled expeditiously 'and without accident."
