The present members of the Heathcote County Council do not want their likenesses to look clown from a stout oak frame on the storms and lulls of future members of that body. The question of whether a photograph should be taken or not came up last night. The chairman, Cr. "W. W. Scarff, asked the other members what they thought of the proposal. Cr. O. Flavell said that ho was not particular; Cr. W. Kerr said that as far as he was concerned he did not want it. The proposal lapsed.

Messrs B. Murrel-, and V. Donald returned to Doubtful Sound on the 17th inst., after a successful trip up the coast to George Sound, where they secured two very hue Wapiti heads, a 13 and a 15-pointer, which were very heavy and had a spread of 60in (says the "Southland Times'). They report that the herd was on high country and very difficult to get at, one head talcing nine hours to get it down to the Sound. The southerly limit of the herd was found at Caswell Sound, and had not spread apparently very far north. The animals secured are in very good condition. Messrs Murrel, senr, and Donald have gone to Dusky Sound, where they hope to be successful with Moose.

The following nominations for the Heathcote County Council have been reveived by the County Clerk-.—Mount Pleasant: Mr Birtwistle lliley, nominated by Messrs Arthur Morten and Frederick H. W. Gale. Heathcote Valley: Mr Charles Flavcll, nominated by Messrs F. King and L; Salt. Nominations close on May Ist, and the election takes place on May 9th. The City Council mad(* representations to the ivuuistcr of iniernai Affairs tuat authority be given tor the payment of the cost of a" loan poll out ot the loan money should the loan be authorised by toe ratepayers, lestorday the Town Clerk received a. reply front the lion. YV. Dowme otewart stating that the question of making provision to enable tiio cost of loan polls to be charged against the loan had prior to the Councils communication received very careful consideration, Gut it was regretted it was not considered desirable to make the amendment asked for. The matter was principally governed by Section 40 of tiie Local Elections and Polls Act, 1908, which provided for the payment of costs incidental to an election out of the revenue of the local authority, and that provision ivns by Section 15 of tho Local Ejections and Polls Amendment .Act. 1913, applied to polls other than elections. It would, of course, be obvious that if a loan poll were not carried tho cost would of necessity have to be charged against the general account.

In an editorial article the "vSouthland Times" makes the following comments : Southland anglers will not read with any pleasure the report that there has been a big run of quinuat salmon in the Clutha. While these fish were confined to the northern streams people at this end of the island could listen to the enthusiastic praises of Mr Ayson 6 activities with equanimity, but the movement of the quinnat in a southerly direction brings the danger closer to our own streams. It will indeed be strange—if the Government after claiming ail the credit for the establishment of the Atlantic salmon in the Waiau should iteelf be the agent for the destruction of the sporting fish. The danger of the quinnat, we are assured, is that he will 'bring about the elimination of other fish in-our streams, and will not himself provide good sport as a recompense. When the quinnat was introduced it was argued that it wouid be confined to certain rivers, but it would appear that thi.s hope was illfounded because the quinnat is spreading fairly rapidly. If these fish invade the Southland streams and di'h'e out the trout and salmon which at the present are the envy of other parts of the Dominion, the introducers of the quinnat will be vehemently cursed as the enemies of anglers and of one of the most potent tourist attractions of the eouth.

A number of alterations to the train services are advertised by the Railway Department. The game shooting season in the district of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society opens on Tuesday. At Thursday's poll the Invercargill ratepayers carried proposals to establish a "fire board and to construct tepid baths. The To Kniti War Memorial Cominitteei has decided to let a contract to Messrs W r . Parkinson and Co., of Auckland, for the erection of a war memorial in New Zealand marble. A trial was made yesterday by the tramway authorities of the new Leyland 'bus to run between Sockburn and Templeton. The 'bus has been built upon a 2-ton, 30 h.p.. Leyland chassis and will go into commission on Monday. The annual meeting of the Christchurch Beautifying Association is to be held on May 9th and will take the form of a public meeting of those interested in the beautifying of the city. A lantern lecture on beautifying will be given by Dr. Charles Chilton. The members of the Arbitration Court (his Honour Mr Justice Frazer, Mr W. A. Scott, and Mr H. Hunter) are at present in Chrisichurch, but are engaged exclusively on chamber business. They will leave for Dtinedin next week, and the next Christchurch sittings of the Court will commence on May 15th. A warning is inserted in our advertising column to the effect that a person who is not authorised to collect for St. Saviour's Special Building Fund Campaign has been soliciting subscriptions in various districts. The public are therefore warned not to give to any person unless he has an official receipt book. A large envelope, bearing the Valparaiso postmark, and the imposing indiction "The Provost and Town Council of ChristohurchV and all Relations," was delivered to the Town. Clerk yesterday, a.nd by him handed. to the Mayor. What was meant by ''All Relations" did not seem at all clear, and it could only be surmised that the writer had in mind the notion of poor relations and wished to include the undeveloped districts round ah©ut the city. The envelope was opened with some curiosity. It was found to contain a leaflet printed in Spanish and adorned with a drawing of a peculiar sort of man holding a bunch of keys and looking through a window. What it all meant nobody knew. A supplementary leaflet, however; was also found within the envelope. This was printed in English and consisted of 31 Scriptural excerpts predicting the end of the times of the Gentiles. The communication was referred to the Waste Paper Committee.

An ingenious device, patented bj Mr W. GurKett, taxi-driver, for indicating the directi'qn a car is at night when approaching a crossing or intersection of a was shown before the committee of the Nelson Automobile Association this week isays the "Mail.") The device is fixed to the bonnet of the car in the same place as the mascottes are and consists of a cylinder at the end of which is an electric bulb. This is controlled by a switch operated by the driver. Wheri approaching a corner tlie driver signals the direction he is goina by switching the cylinder to the right or left as the case mav be and at the same time turning on the li<jht. beam of light shoots out and the driver of the car approaching or following at once sees the direction the other car is going. The demonstration was most satisfactory, particularly when meeting another car. The small light at the front was switched on, pointing in a direct line, and when turning to the right or left the arms swung and the most inexperienced driver would thus be able to see the direction the other car intended to proceed. Another advantage is that in case of engine trouble, the light can be directed to enable the motorist to inspect the engine. The attachment may also be fixed to the back of the car, and this will enable cars overtaking to see the way the other car intends to turn. As the device will be the market after several minor improvements hav© been effected at a reasonable pricOj it should be in demand by motorists.
