SHIPPING NOTES. A strong head wind delayed the arrival of the ferry steamer Mararca until noon yesterday. The Dunedin express was delayed to enable the southern passengers to connect. The Kauri completes loading to-day for Auckland;, and sail ifon that part direct. The Kahika, due to-morrow from Timaru, loads on Monday for Nelson and New Plymouth. The Kamona should arrive to-night from Westport. The Kok«po has been delayed at Greymouth, and is now due, via Timaru, on Friday. Tea Canopus is to load on Monday for Westport. The John is dne on Wednesday from Dunedin to load for Wellington, Wanganui, and New Plymouth. Captain J. E. Walker has taken commend of the Corinna' temporarily, vice Captain F. Mr "West has been for some time employed on the vessels of the Cittiadinn-Pacific Line. He left New Zealand as second engineer of the H-a-u----piri for Home during the war period. The A .and A. stoumer City of Bombay is due on Tuesday from Wellington to discharge caTgo from Philadelphia and New York. The C. and D. steamer Port Melbourne is cxpectedi on Wednesday from Wellington to discharge West of England cargo. From here she goes to Napie;i to complete. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's liner Raranga arrived yesterday morning from Port Chalmers to load for London. She is to sail on Tuesday for Bluff and Wellington to complete, and loaves Wellington on May Bth for London, via Monte Video.

Tho Merchant Shipping Advisory Coiumittee'o report regarding life-saving appliances on passenger steamships recommends that boats sufficient for all aboard should be carried as far as possible without encumbering the decks and impeding the prompt handling of the lifeboats. Where this cannot be done, the deficiency of accommodation should be met by means of light buoyant apparatus. In ally case, in addition to boat accommod-ation for all, light buoyant api paratus should bo provided for twenty-five per cent, of those aboard; also motor-boats with. wireless should be carried in certain cafes.
