After leaving the English Channel the Dorset experienced heavy weather for ten days. On the night of February 2<srd a violent cyCunie hurricane was encountered. At tuues it attained a velocity of over 100 miles an hour, and seas swept clean over the deck and boat deck, carrying away screens and fifty feet of railing. 'Hie vessel was practically hove-to for three days, and on February 24th she logged only forty-four nnies. After passing the Azores favourable weather was experienced for the remainder of the voyage. The Tainui leit. Southampton a fortnight later. When three days out from Balbpa the ivessel sighted the schooner Xapo, flying distress signals. She reported that her provisions had gone bad, and that she had on board thirty-six souis, including the passengers and crew of another small sailing vessel which had been wrecked 011 the Galapagos Islands. The Tainui sent ample provisions to carry the Napo to her destination.
