SPORTING.

Nominations for the Marlborough Racing Club's autumn meeting close tomorrow. Tb? big Sydney autumn double event, tho Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup, was evidently this year more than usually tinged with sensation. The Epicure, the Doncaster winne*', had run 60 badly the previous Saturday at Rosehill that he drifted out in the bet-ting to a forlorn price, and his early backers were unable to unload any of their bets. From tlio description of t-he race The Epicure was fortunate to win, for, only for \\ bittier coming out from the rails in the last half-furlong md letting him "through, he could nc,ver have reached the leaders. There are numerous stories current of fortunate backers who were forced to stick to The Epicuro to their ultimate gain. David's success in tlio Sydney Cup was not so much a lucky matter as his actual appearance in tlio field. -V wool: before the race his owner, Air Otway Falkiner, ordered his trainer, W. Booth, to scratch the horse, _as he considered that with 9st 7lb David had no chaijce of success. Booth disobeyod orders,' and prevailed on the owner to start the horse, who was galloping great guns in his work. A. Wood. the rider of David, amazed the onlookers bv sending him along in tho early stages, with the result that he was not at any stage further back than fourth, and fairly outstayed the opposition at the finish.

The Sydney writer "Iroquois" pens the following concerning David: —Da<vid has been the hardest-worked horse wo have seen for many years. But be can't be knocked out. At two Tears ho had 21 races—as many as most good horses have in two seasons. At three he contested 24 races, at four 17, ant! this season, at five years, 17. In the 79 races he has traversed 97 miles 2, furlongs, and has taken part yi many vigorous contests. It- is believed that on one occasion ho was given a spell. For a few weeks, instead of visiting the tracks each morning, ho was allowed to take walking exercise on the roads at Rosehilll Compared with Australasia's best stayers, Carbine and Poitrd, David has been much harder worked. Carbine, in his racing career, covered 66' miles 5 furlongs, and Poitrel 54 miles 3 furlongs. David is one case in favour of two-year-olds racing, for ait that nee in bis 21 races be covered 14£ miles, nonius); Carbine's 3 miles 5 furlongs, and Poitrel's 2i miles.

The Monk's ivictory in the A.J.G. Sires' Produce Stakes surprised Sydney racegoers by the manner in which it was gained. Even The Monk's etaunchest admirers considered that speed rather than stamina was his forte, but in the Sires' Produce Stakes he won his race in the last half furlong, and it was conceded a high-grade performance to give a big start.to Call Bell, and then defeat her by three-quarters of a length. His ability to stay out seven furlongs so well suggests him as a possibility for the Derbies, although the Absurds are not noted for staying powers. The Mnnlr cost his owner, Mr G-eor ge_ Tye, 1200 guineas as a yearling, and including the Sires' Produce Stakes has now won 7963 60vs in prizemoney, and a good ruth in wagers, for bis owner is a big bettor. At Lingfield on February 10th special interest attached to the meeting at level weights—lOst 7'b each—of Groomsport and Gasper, the best two year-old hurdlers seen out in England during the recent jumping season. There were only three runners, the third being; Groomsport's stable companion, Ulster Division, who was there to see the pace was solid. Slight odds were laid on Gasper, and Groomsport was at even money. For a good portion of the trip Ulster Division and Gasper raced together, about twelve lengths ahead of Groomsport. A couple of hurdles from home Wootton took the latter up to the leaders, and eventually won by five lencrths from Ulster Division, who beat Gasper a length and a half. Tbe time for the two miles was 4m 4s, which was excellent, considering the weather was wet, and the going very heavy.

Although weight in the North Island Challenge Stakes was published officially at lOst, he carried only 9st slb in that race, an error having been made in giving him the full penalty instead of slb. The innovations at Trentham were favourably commented upon by Wellington writers. Despite a number of closo finishes, the judge, from his new position on tlie_ official stand, was able to give iiis decisions promptly, and to general _ satisfaction. The numbers were hoisted on the jockeys' semaphore, with which the judge was in direct communication by telephone. Concerning the false rail at the entrance to the straight, one writer states that it is not very popular with the jockeys. Their contention is that it comes out too abruptly, and ends too soon. They think it may be better when they have had a little more experience, but consider it should be extended to be quite parallel with the true rail before it ends. -As it is, the horses are still turning when they leave the rail. It was noticeable that several horses ran very wide, but there was also an absence of crowding and jostling along the rail leading to the winning post.

A Press Association telegram from Pohnerston North states that White Comet has been scratched for the Sires' Produce Stakes and Manawatu Stakes at the'Manawatu Racing Club's meeting.
