"A pronounced success" was the unanimous verdict passed last night by the numerous guests at tho Arts Ball, which was held in tho Art Gallery, and which, like all successful fancy dress balls, was a delightful ; sight to behold. Persian, Egyptian, Dutch, Spanish, and Chinese ladies, .. with* splendid Cosmopolitan spirit, mingled happily; courtiers and peasant girls, careless of rank and caste, danced rythmically, while noticeablo ? , amongst the gay throng were a tell, exquisitely gowned Bacchante, a charming Maid of the Mountains, a digni- ' fled Queen Eleanor, and a gruesomely realistic skeleton. The decorations, which had a cachet and distinction all their own, were the most effective seen In Christchurch for many years. In the ball-room Mr E. Wallwork and Mr J. Weeks had : achieved a veritable triumph of decorative art. Red and whito streamers, arranged to give a dome-like effect to the ceiling, and red and white shades to the electoliers, wore only incidents in the elaborate scheme. From the eeiling, iil the middle of the room, was suspended a lay-figure, cavalierly seated on a red and white hoop, and, despite her precarious position, pluckily holding a much-used palette and /brash. Large and cleverly executed pictures, illustrative of the three arts—sculpture, architecture, and painting—occupied prominent positions in. the mural decorations, and black cats, lucky pigs, crescent moons, and all kinds of inascottes were dotted amongst the riot of colour produced by strings of balloons. Part of the Permanent Gallery was ;requisitioned for dancing. The other Sart, by the artistic conception and eft workmanship of Mr and Mrs Cecil Kelly, was transformed into a charming boulevade cafe, the Cafe des Trois Arts> with its gay signboard, proclaiming at one end "Ici on parle Francais,' 1 and at the other end "English spoke here." Under the shelter of the red and White striped awning, lighted with Chinese lanterns, and bright with hnge clusters of vari-col-onred balloons, were numbers of small topper tables, while two huge suspended umbrellas added to the gay and- fes- ; tive appearance of the cafe.
