A reaping hook fell from his hand. . ~-i Dr. Crooke stated that Schumacher was dead when he arrived. The blood vessels in hie neck had been severed. The Coroner returned a verdict accordingly.

"A man named Edward Smith, of Kekerangu, attempted to commit suicide on Thursday night by inflicting wounds on his throat and taking poison. He was conveyed to Kaikpura- Hospital, where he is making a good .recovery. At the Kaikoura races on Friday Edward Garrett attempted to cross the course after the sixth race, and was knocked down by a trotter returning to the paddock.
