Mr P. M. H. lime, formerly at I Christ's College and College House, has returned to Christchurch, after aai extended visit to America and England. Mr W. R. Cox, B.E. formerly of Canterbury College) left tor England laet week bv the Ruapehu. Mr Cos was awarded an exhibition tenable at the works of the General Electric Company, Birmingham Mr P. T. Cox, of College House, has been awarded the Senior University Scholarship in Geology. Mr .Cos is Senior Student of College House. Mr E. P. Cowles, deputy district telegraph engineer at Hamilton, is retiring from the Poet and Telegraph Department after 40 years' service. Mr J. L. Hardy, of Canterbury College who recently passed tho final examination lor the B.E. degree, is at present on the staff of the Forestry Department.. Wellington. A Sydnev message says the Rev. T. Frederick Potts has been appointed president of the Methodist Conterence. He previously had charge of various suburban parishes in Sydney. Mr E. J. Howard, MP., is spending a holidav in North Auckland. After a sojourn "at the Heleusville Spa he went on to Whangarei. with the object of seeing the development of the gum lands~"cf the North'. Mr H. J. Marriner, who has been president of the Canterbury Branch ot the Navy League for three years, stated at last night's meeting of that body that he did not intend to seek re-elec-tion. Mr R. G. Mac-Gibbon, of Christchurch, has been appointed by the Southland Power Board to the position of assistant engineer to fill the pine© rendered vacant by Mr Fergu.-ou's resignation. The Sumner Peace Memorial Committee have elected the Rev. W. McAra chairman and Mr W. V. Siddnll hon. secretary and treasurer. At the next meeting a plan for securing donations will be formulated. Mr E. C. Chester has been appointed to the engineering staff of the Southland Electric Power Board. Mr Chester came to New Zealand' from Canada, and has been working for different firms in Auckland,. Wellington, Christchurch, and Dtinedin. A large party of the senior boy s and girls, together with members of the staff of the School for the Deaf, Sumner, walked over to 'Lyttelton last evening to bid farewell to the late Director, Mr J. E. Stevens, and Mrs Stevens, who left by the ferry steamer en route to England. Mr and Mrs Stevens had a rousing send-off, the pupils, in spite of their apparent disability, mustering up some hearty cheers. At the annual gathering of Wellington veterans of the South African War, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —Patron, General Sir A. Robin; president, Mr D. C. Bates; vice-president, Mr J. J. Clark; committee, Messrs R. A, Metcalfe, McIntvre, H. G. Duncan, J. E. Tilling, M/McColl, A. Wilson, E. E. Clifford, and Riley; chaplain, the Rev. A. W. H. Compton; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. E. Taylor. ■= The prefects and council of the Wang.inui Technical College held a valedictory tea this week, with a view to giving a farewell to Mr L. Gilberd and Mr V. H. Reid, who are leaving for the Otago and Canterbury Universities . respectively. Complimentary references were made -to the very important part these two students took ra the life of-the College during the past five or six years, and in- football, cricket, hnd swimming they had materiallv assisted in bringing fame-to the College. Mr H. W. S. Ruffell, sub-collector of Customs at Dunedin. has been appointed collector at Invercargill, in succession to Mr Hawley, who -will retire on superannuation. Mr* Bruce Anderson, who was recently appointed inspactor at Dunedin, will take Mr Ruffell's position there; Mr J>. W. Dunne, examining officer at Dunedin, has been promoted to the position of examining officer at Wanganui, and Mr Buckler, shipping clerk at Auckland, has been promoted to be assistant examining; officer at Dunedin. ! An influential deputation consisting of a large number of prominent > residents and members of the Sumner Burgesses' Association waited upon Mr W r . H. Nicholson last night with a request. that he should allow himself to be. nominated for the position of Mayor of' Sumner. The Rev. Wm. McAra, the chairman of the Burgesses' Association, stated the case tor the deputation, and said that they were prepared to work hard for Mr Nicholson's return. Mr Nicholson thanked them for the honour they had done him. He felt that it would be a difficult matter to follow such an excellent Masor as the Hon. J. Barr. Although he was verv busy, he felt tb*t it was his duty to assist if his help was required. He realised the strength and sincerity of the deputation and would accede to. their request.
