* , POSSESSION OF OPIUM. (PEsaa assocuwok teleqeaju.) WELLINGTON, February 27. Six Chinamen appeared in Court this morning on charges relating to the smoking and possession of opium. Detectives gave evidence that one Chinaman when the raid was made offered £ls "Hush Money." The Chinamen, in the witness box maintained that the detectives when offered £ls said that that was not enough. They wanted £SO. All the accused were convicted. The Magistrate said he would fine Lou Jock £4O in default two months' imprisonment. "Wone Chong, Sue Hoy, Ah Fang and Joh Mee were each fined £2O, in default one month's imprisonment. Mr Page added that it_was not necessary for the detectives to £o into the bos and deny the charges made by Lou Jock that when he offered the detectives £ls they said it was not enough, and, wanted £SO. The ?.la;nstrate asked if the Chinaman did not understand English well, how could he know what was said. As to the allegation made ha did not believe a word of it.
