George Newman pleaded guiity to a charge of being a rogue and vagabond in that ne was found at night on the enclosed area 01 the Farmers' Saleyards. "I had a few drinks and went there to lie down," said the accused. Sub-Inspector J. K. Simpson said that acoused had been found at 5.30 that morning asleep on some straw. . , . Harry Smith pleaded guilty to a charge of stea'.ing, on October 14th, 1920, one gentleman's bicycle, valued! at £6., the property ol George Alexander. . ~ , Acting-Chief Detective T. Gibson said that tlie bicycle had been stolen in 1920, and that a warrant had been issued for the arrest of the accused, who disappeared. The bicycle had not been recovered. ■ After hearing the accused's statement the Magistrate said tliat there were exceptional circumstances. He would adopt a course which he very seldom, followed in such cases by admitting the accuse<i. to probation for six months. REMANDED. Harold G. S. Wolfe (Mr P. P. J. Amodeo) was charged that, having received the sum of £176 5s 9d between August Ist and December 16th, from members of the Zealandia Boot Factory Sick Benefit .Society, he had ' failed to render an • account of the same, thereby committing theft. At the application of Acting-Chief Detective T. Gibson a remand was granted until December 30th, bail being allowed, self in £3OO and two sureties of £iso each. (Before Mr H. Y. Widcowsori, S.M.) Acting-Chief Detective T. Gibson said that the boy was very clever at school. He had damaged the bicycle to the extent of 23. ' You've already given him.a thrashing?" asked the Magistrate of the father. "Too rigly. 1" said the father. Tha boy was admonished and discharged, the father to- pay the damage done to the bicycle within fourteen days.
