SPORTING.

Nominations for the Marton J.C. s ' Summer Meeting close to-day. ]Noniiuations for the Southland K.GVs Summer Meeting close on Friday. Acceptances for tho Auckland and Manawatu Summer Meeting close on Friday. A careful study of public form is the best method of solving the problem on the racecourse, "What will win?" To this end no sport-man can afford to be ■without a copy of the Pocket lotion of tho "Turf Itegister," to be published early this week. Only a limited number are being printed, and orders should be sent in without delay to tho publishers tho Christehurch. Press Company, Ltd. Director, tho two-year-old colt by Nassau from Culross has been told by Mr G li Stead to his brother, Mr W G Stead. Director, who to date has started four times for one eecond and ono third, will bo seen out shortly under Ins new owner's colours. \ Wellir-ton writer states that the mew stand ..c Trentham will bo practically tho last thing in structures or its kind. It will be in use at the \\ ellington Cup Meeting in January, but it will still bo a long way from completion. The Auckland Club's handicapper disregarded both national's and Kilbird s ■ winning efforts at Feildmg so far as thf Railway Handicap was concerned, it nov . bomg thought necessary to re-handicap. Wter the Summer Meeting, the j Auckland Racing Club proposes to make eome alteration to, and to widen, the racing track between, the six and seven furlong posts. When the work is completed there will be room for forty horses at the seven-furlong barrier, a number in the interests of all concerned it is to be hoped that it is never called upon to accommodate. H., Cairns, who made a trip to the Auckland Summer Meeting last year, intends to ride again at that fixture this year. -It was unders-tood that F. Dempsey, who has steered Eurythmic in most of his races, would accompany Cairns from Australia, but he has had to make other arrangements. The.popular ]\ T ew Zealand trainer, George Price, had aj minor winner at a recent Meeting at Canterbury Park (Sydney) in Piers Plowman, a three-year-old colt by Feramorz from Dreamer? Piers Plowman is owned by the well-known blood stock salesman and gentleman rider, Mr Ken Austin, and in the race under review started at a j •remunerative price. Mr H. W. Brown's horses Still Sea, I Spook, Manu, and Wrangle were bookea to leavo Wellington Jast week by the Ulimaroa for Sydney The failure of the Ulimaroa to get away from Syd-; Bey to time unset these plans. Kaika (King Mark—Simoia) and the grey mareTelfow Hammer are of jumpers that ■are doing well at Trentham. The Intter is by the- Soult— Tauhei horse Mira, front Yellow Bird. Winning Post proved the best to follow in the Mangatua Hurdles at Woodville on Saturday. Malingerer, tho winner, has a record this season of two firsts and one eecond in three starts, while Woden has bee!n once first and twice second in his last three starts. Doroulede, who was successful in the Trial Handicap, raced in Australia in the early part of this season. She has been galloping well on the tracks at Trentham. during the last week or two, beating horses above Trial Plate standards. Derou'ede is a three-year-old filly by Absurd from Derelict by Birkenhead fr6m Solitaire by Eiridspord. , Tongototoa, second to Derrulede, was ' irunner-up last time out-to Aeriform on * the second day at Feilding. Ambitious, who scored in the open spring, evont, made tho second winner * wredvby Absurd, her dam, Ursula, being by Grafton from Ural by .Grand „ Flaneur.' Ambitious has been a very useful performer this season, for in , nine Starts she has been returned a winner, three times, second twicn, and third once, while last year her eight starts provided four firsts and one second., Chimera's second to Ambitious sug- | geats that the Finland mare will pay her way at the holiday meotings. and providing he remains sound it seems safe to predict one or two moro good handicaps to go to his credit in the near future. Good Sport is so far this season true to hi 3 name, for in his five starts he has let his supporters down only once, i winning three times and being second once. He is bv Polvdamon from Amusement, and although so far he has not worked his way out of the hack class, his record makes him out more than useful, and he may prove a worthy relative' to that sterliag performer Chortle.' ltosthenc3. who defeated a useful field in the Borough Welter at Woodville, is, as his name suggests, by Demosthenes. Mosthenes, who is now a six-vear-old, was not raced at all last season, but as a three and four-year-old he wa3 quite a useful performer. His only previous start this season was when unplaced in the Raumai Welter at Ashhurat, won by Civilform. After Merry Dav's good showing in the Woodvillc" Handicap, it is unlikely that backers would overlook Fera.in the concluding'event of the day. The Feramorz filly made a good showing behind Merry Day on the opening day at Feilding in a much stronger field than she was called upon to meet on Saturday. Mr H. P. Harrison tendered his resignation as a steward of the Masterton Racing Club at Friday's meeting, lhe president (Mr C. F. Vallance) referred -.j the yeoman services given by Mr Harrison, and a motion to have his services placed on record was carried unanimously. WOODVILLE DISTRICT J.C.'S SUMMER MEETING.^ (SPECIAL TO " THE IEESS.") ■WOODVILLE, December 9. Though only showery for tho first half of tho programme ram then fell heavily and a lot of people left th« course. The attendance vis not very large in the- first place, and the totalisator returns Buffered in consequence, A lot of interest was'taken in the two principal events. Royal Box, who is the »bsohite favourite for tho Auckland Oup. was expected to dominate Jie position in the Oete Handicap, but ■failure has to be written against his name His display wsib mystifying to his* connexions as he atrroped well, anfil after tho race ha appeared little the w<.rso for his exertions. He might have got second placr but had no chance with the useful Ambitious, who soon took charge and won all the way. Royal Box had ms rider in troublo m the straight; where his reins appeared to be. slipping, and twice ho .had tcrtuka'a fresh hold of the chestnut, who finished on well undjr punishment and with a little further to go might have got, second place from Chinieia, but the form j waa anything but attracts e. Statuette showed all hor old pace for a while, and when Ohvei gets a few moro gallops into her she! should bo able to reproduce her beet form. She is not in the Railway''":Handicap at Ellerslie, but should be in the money at Aivapuni. , Scion, who contcatid tho Woodville Handicap, looks o very fit horse, and there are less, unlikely'things than that hj« will''again finish in front of Royal Box at Ellerslie. A. Reed; will ride the latter and M. McCarten will be on Scion.

Merry Day, a very fit mare now, was the publio choico in the Woodville Handicap,

but a bad passage beat her into eecond place. Sunart, who ran in bandages, led lor seven turlongs, whtn Admiral Oodrmgwn ran past him, and revelling in Um going, went, on a«l wen iroui Merry .Day, who iuufihtd Btrongiy. iiiuoha was not a.i hums in tne going, out bo is regaining hw form, and ahou-d annex a stoke at Kllerslie. 11 Sunart can be Kept aound ha will win a race at the Manawaiu The southern three-year-old, Many Kittle, is expected up for tiie Manawatu Cup, which does not loo* like being a hard race to win. NEWMARKET BLOODSTOCK SALES (By i Cable—Press Association—CopyiigH.) (Australian: and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, December 9. Bloodstock at the Newmarket sales realised 236,000 guineas. RICCARTON TBAINLNa NOTES. The outside of the trial grass gallop was open for fast work on Saturday, but was •not in great demand, and was. only used when mentioned in the details given below. The plough was heavy. Veil and Vespucci were tho first to -work the reverse way, and they separately galloped six furlongs under a rtroflg pull. Pluto, Tressayr, and Cupidon ran six furlong,to gether in lm 183-ss. All there were pulling hard as the winnig post was passed. It is rumoured that S,. J. Mason will not go to Auckland and that P. Mason will take Pluto, Vespucci, and Tressayr north to carry J Mr G. D. Greenwood's oolours. Winning Hit finished well at the end of six furlongs ran in lm 18 3-5», and Angelo could not havo improved the lm 19 4-5s he took over the same ground. Top Score sprinted fivo furlonga ini lm i 3-6s, and Wild Hind ran the wuno distance in a shade better time. j

The most interesting gallop of the morning was that of the Auckand Cup candidates, Palestrina, Foo Chow, and Boyal Star over twolva furlongs. All three were carrying lightweights, but Palestrina, had about lOlbs the worst of it. Palestrina waß the first to show out, and she made the running from Food Chow and Boyal Star, Foo Chow being wide out. The first half mile was covered in 52 l-ss, tlio thrse being in a heap, but before reaching the five furlong post Palestrina was clear of Foo Chow again, with Eoval Star falling back. Foo Chow hesitated "at the crossing, whero he is usually pulled up, and Palestrina. led him past the seven furlong post by lengths in lm 32 l-sa, and she was further ahead passing the mile peg in lm 46 2-sb. The Clarenceux mare passed the winning post in 3m 16s, well clear ot 100 Chow, who was jiot galloping gonoroußly, with Eoyal Star a reck further back, xhis finished the work the reverse wav of the track. Limelight, who was assisted home by IKff,! was allowed to run ten furlongs well within ■ himself with a featherweight up. Tiff is to take Goosestep's place in G. Murray Ayns- '. ley's team for the Dunedin Summer Meet-! ing, on account of Gooststep having strained a shoulder. Wink and Ardour were companions in a ! strontr wallop over five furlongs on the grass, I in which both fillies shaped well. I Many Kittle and Deucalion were not doingtheir best while they ran six furlongs together, but Whipping Boy, who was brought homo by Wfcarfdale,' could not have done any-better in his gallop over Eeven furlonga. Counterstroke wae given a strong working gallop over six furlongs. Madam Chiron beat Bonny Friend over half & mile in 625, and Sunny Loch gave Bed Hind weight and beat her over seven furlongs; the timo was not good. Saintly Dreamer sprinted half a mile on the grass in good time, and finished well. Glentruin, who was carrying under 7st, put up the best performance of the morning by running sis furlongs in lm 15 l-ss. The big chestnut mare was given a kick or two in the last furlongs, and was doing her be»t but she finished on wall, and it was a fine gallop. ' ° Economist and Murihaupo were together air the way while, running six furlongs in lm 19s but Economist was holding the two-xear-old at the finish, as was to be expected of a decent claea four-year-old when pitted againsf a. two-year-old at even weighla on a heavy ; track. * j Mustard Pot was not asked to gallop while running five furlongs with Oricot in lm 6s j Songbird finished well ot the end of •even flurlongs run in fair time. Mythology brought him home from between the five and eix furlong posts. Agnola and Trevella were schooled over tour flights of hurdles together. Trevella baulked at tha first fence, frit jumped »

at tho second attempt and joined Agnola, v/ho was waiting for him. Both geldings jumped the last three fences well. Afterwards Trevella sprinted half a mil* on the grass with Swallow Flight. Battle Scone and Mozania were separately given half-paco work. There was nothing between Raconteur and Sweet Water at the business end of six furlongs. ... Eighteenponce held Martis while the pair ran half a mile on the gross in fairly good time, and Boadicea, did likewise with Jass over the same course- in a shade belter time than tho first pair. Tatau Tatau was too good for Gay Life over 6ix furlongs on the grass, and Castellan with about 6st up, ran out a mile, on the samo track, from end to end at a solid pace. Grim Joke was too good for Barmaid over six furlongs, and Gamester beat «. filly by Gay Lad—Gargaron very easily over half a mile. The filly could not act at all in the heavy going. The work concluded with Totist and Kukume having a tussle over five furlongs on the grass. They -were very evenly matched. TEOTTINCr NOTEa Acceptances for the K«w Brighton T.C.'s Spring Meeting close to-day at noon. t Nominations for the Canterbury ParVT.O. a Summer Meeting close to-morrow at noon. The grass track at Kow Brighton was open on Saturday. A large, number of horses worked, but with or two exceptions the times registered, were poor, despite the fact that the going was good and the weather conditions favourable. White Lupin (G. F. Bobinson) was seen to advantage while trotting a mile and a half. Our Goldie, in the same stable t covered two miles but was not extended. Onyx gave her usual pleasing display over two niile3, Elite assisting over the last ten furlongs. J. Thome's pair, Percy Dillon and Petrova, went about a. mile at a sound pace, Petrova was soro and of little use to his companion, who is improving. A. G. Wilson drove Auguste DTilon a mile andl a. quarter, which the son of Huia Dillon did in his best style. Thero was little between Ivy Irvington (G. F. Bobinson) and Brownwood (J. Armstrong) at tho end of a. mile and a half. The pace was solid and both horses moved freely. Sympathy had most to cay in a useful work out "with Partner over a mile and a auarter. The first named is looking well and putting plenty of dash into her work. Colenut and Th* Rook worked in company over twelve furlongs, and both showed a useful turn of sp-jed'. • . Willie Lincoln vcorked on the dirt track over several circuits. He sprinted in patches and judging by his display, etill possesses his—speed, and is keeping sound. Engagement (in saddle) worked two miles, but did not show much speed. Tho trotter Whisht was allotted two miles, and considering that he was well out/ registered good time. Peter tho First made no mistakes while trotting two miles, a similar task being allotted to Marvolo.

Olive Huon sprinted a. mile and acquitted herself well. Othera that did useful exercise were Pnnzora, Wild Sunset, Fancy Boy, Grey Lady, Lady Audubon, King Dillon, Kingsmoor, Golden Peter, Proud Elsie, Leila Denver, Dusky Locanda, Gleaming, Ken Trocey, Royal Oak/ Lord Denver, Plywood, and Harewood. Happy Voyage and Pearlie. Chimes will not fulfil their engagements at Auckland. Nominations for the Gore T.C.'s Annual Meeting are' good' and well up to those of past yoars. The entries arc confined) principally to horses owned and trained in Otago and Southland, • but there is plenty of good material in the list for a successful day's racing. Mrs Blair's- brood mare Sylvia has foaled a filly to Logan Pointer and visita Great Audubon. The threc-year-ole! oolt Ahuriri won the Waiakto Trotting Cup at Hamilton on Saturday from seven others. The opposition was not very strong and the son of Cathedral Chimes and MuricaU was able to win in 8 2-5 aeo, slower than his handicap. The race should do Mr Morton's colt ft lot of good and bring him into more favour for the Great Northern Derby at Auckland this month. The connexions of Zolook Palm had a royal win over his success in the Claudelaud's Handioap at Hamilton. At Greymouth in October the Hutt trained colt won the Introductory Handicap of one mile and a half in Sm 51 2-5 a in heavy going, which was equal to about 3m 85s on a good track, but this must have been overlooked by the handicapper as the son of Hal Zolook and Myrtle Palm was on a 8m E9s mark and he won in 8m 38 3-Es or 20 2-5s faster than his handicap.
