ATHLETICS.

CANTERBURY CLUB. ANNUAL SPOETS MEETING. Brilliant weather was experienced by the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club for its Spring Meeting, held at Lancaster Park on Saturday afternoon. Contrary to expectations, the attendance was poor, but thoee who did attend were treated to some keen racing. The club, however, erred somewhat i in the direction of having a too lengthy pro- ] ramme, which was not as attractively arraned as it might have been, with the result I that the spectators were at times rather I bored. From the athletic point of view, how- j ever, the gathering was quite successful. The fields were large and competition was keen, showing the revival of interest that the sport has experienced. As an example, it might be J mentioned that G. Graham, of the Y.Ai.C.A. Club, ran over five miles during the afternoon, competing in the three niilea, one mile, ! half-mile, and relay races. Some very pro- i mising young runners were brought to light, i amongst them H. Lee, a iiueen-year-old sprinter, who has, one should say a bright I future. A boy of that age who carl do 24sec j for the 220 yds is very unusual. C. H. Taylor, J the Australasian champion, scored a very j popular win from scratch in the 880 yds. He i is not yet quite fit, but evidently has lost I nothing of his last year's pace. J. H. ' Kalder, the ex-Christ's College boy, also was not fit, but his performance in the mile indicated that he should do something out of the ordinary before the season is over. The Tramways Band played an acceptable programme of music during the afternoon. At the conclusion of the harriera' race, hi 3 Lordship Bishop Brodie presented the challenge cup to the winner, H. P. Ault. Following were the various results;— 120 yds Maiden Handicap—First heat: H. Edginton (ecr) 1, E. A. Webb (lyd) 2. Time, 13 3-ssec. Second heat: J. Yates"(2yds) 1, G. Barker (scr) 2. In a great finish, Booth got home by less than a yard from Ault, with Graham three or four yards back. Time, 4min 27 2-ssec. Throwing the Hammer Handicap—J. McHolm (scr) 1.
