A very important step in the history of lawn tennis In Canterbury was taken on Saturday, when a. block of land, comprising nine acres, was purchased by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis As«ociation for the purpose of laying down Association courts. Tha land is conveniently situated. It has two entrances from "Woodham road, at the bottom of Robertson street, and is convenient to No. 10 trams. The land was purchased by the special committee from Mr R. Heyder, and the price is regarded as a reasonable one. There will be a special committee meeting to-night, and a> meeting of delegates on December 19th w> oonsider the purchase, and to formulate schemes for financing the project. An amount of close on £IO,OOO wil be involved in the scheme in its final shape, according to a statement of the secretary of the Association on Saturday. Tennis players oi the district are to be asked to help in financing the scheme. The rapid solution of the problem during the last week is due to two factors—the generosity of Mr J. H. Kirk and the energy of Mr W. N. Seay, president of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, and his committee. Mr J. H. Kirk has promised to give an amount up to £BOO towards the cost of the courts, end this munificent gift provides an example which it is hoped many members of the community will feel disposed to follow. Both grass and hard courts will be provided in the new scheme. It is probable .that members will be enrolled in the ordinary way, with the provision that there shall be no Saturday afternoon play. At that time the court* will be reserved for matches.
